Water is sitting on top of freezer compartment and leaking out on floor

  • davewoudstra Jun 16, 2014

Hi Anonymous, I want to help you with your problem, but I need more information from you. Can you please add details in the comment box as to where the water is coming out, in front of the fridge or the rear? Is there any ice buildup under the freezer drawer, have you checked the condenser coils to see if they are dirty/clogged with hair (common problem if you have any pets at all).

Make sure that your drawer is aligned properly and that there is no ice build up anywhere. Mine built up some ice in the very back and side somehow, and caused the door not to close tightly which lead to a similar problem. Removing the ice build up cured it.

If you need more help just post here and I will give you more informaion, also if it's got a lot of water you will have to remove the drip pan and drain it out

SOURCE: ice maker leaks and ice

The evaporator coils frost up in normal use and every eight hours or so the entire unit shuts down and the defrost heater comes on to melt the frost. This cycle last about 20 minutes. The melted frost drips into a drain pan and through a drain tube to the drain tray under the freezer/refrigerator where it's evaporated by the condenser fan.

Your drain tube may be stopped up with ice at the upper end because it drains too slow because it's stopped up at the lower end in the evaporator pan under the unit at the floor. It can get dust and mold in it. Once you get the ice out at the top a little pressure with a turkey baster will usually clear it out. Flushing it out with hot water and clorox may help.
Make sure it drains quick enough to prevent refreezing. . The drain should be located below the evaporator coils on the inside of the freezer at the bottom of the rear cover.

Water is building up on bottom of fridge

If you have water build-up on the floor of the food compartment, or ice buildup on the floor of the freezer compartment, you are probably suffering from either a frost problem or from a clogged defrost drain.

Remove everything from your freezer, including all food and any shelves. Do not remove the icemaker (if installed.)
Look at and feel the panel covering the bottom or back of the freezer compartment. Is it thick with frost?
On top freezer models, are the holes in the top of the food compartment that lead to the evaporator choked with ice?
Is there ice forming on, or lots of water on the ceiling of the food compartment?
If the answer is yes to any of these questions, there's probably a defrost problem.
If you suspect a defrost problem, first remove any icemaker that may be installed. You will see a removable panel covering the entire back or bottom of your freezer compartment. There may be 6 to 10 or more screws holding it on. In some units there is a light socket attached to the panel; you'll see this arrangement most often in side-by-sides.

If you start to get an unusual buildup of ice in one particular spot in your freezer, especially beneath the icemaker, check for water leaks.
Water leaking onto the kitchen floor not traceable to one of the problems in Chapters 4 or 6 may be from a leak in the icemaker or door dispenser water system. Icemakers have a water solenoid valve mounted on the back of the fridge, usually behind the back bottom panel, and a water tube that leads straight up the back of the fridge to the icemaker. Door dispensers have a similar water solenoid valve with a water tube that leads beneath the fridge and into the door through a hollow hinge. If your fridge has both features, it's usually a dual water solenoid valve. It can be simple or not-so-simple to fix, but basically it's just a plumbing job.

Hey friend, thank you for the post!

From my understanding you have water leaking out of the freezer of your Frigidaire refrigerator and onto the floor. I would like to ask you a couple of additional questions. First, do you see where the water is coming from? Secondly, what is the model number of your appliance? You can locate your serial tag (which lists your model number) on the inside cabinet of the fresh food compartment normally on the left side in a top mount. But on a side by side it can be found on the right hand side. I look forward to hearing back from you. -Matt

Maytag mtb2156de freezer leaking through the top of the frig. The freezer is keeping things frozen, but water is running onto the floor.

Hello,

That water is from the melting frost of the automatic defrost cycle. Their is drain in the freezer behind the back wall under the evaperator coil that is blocked, so instead of defrost water draining it's pooling in the freezer or in some case espically on models with the freezer on the top,the water is leaking from the freezer vents into the fresh food compartment.
The way to clear the drain is remove back plate and remove all ice build up and GENTLY make a small hole in drain through then totally flush w/warm water.
The exact location of drain is under the coil behind back freezer plate in the center

Water comes out from under the refrigerator every three or four days. I checked everything under. The water hose is find no leaks. The water tray under is empty. Is not a large amount of water maybe...

Hello,
I dont know if you have a side by side or the freezer is on top,but thats a fairly common thing and the following is what i already wrote before what to check when it leaks like your experiencing.

SIDE BY SIDE

The water is from the melted frost of the defrost cycle. The drain at the bottom of the back wall of the freezer is blocked so instead of the water draining into the pan where it will evaperate,it's pooling on the freezer floor and freezing, in many case when the floor indent is full the water will leak onto the floor.By pulling the refrigerator out from the wall, there will be a tube behind the service panel on the right side when looking at it from the rear, that tube can be removed and cleared, then clear the nozzle it connects to inside the freezer.

FREEZER ON TOP
That water is from the melting frost of the automatic defrost cycle. Their is drain in the freezer behind the back wall under the evaperator coil that is blocked, so instead of defrost water draining it's pooling in the freezer or in some case espically on models with the freezer on the top,the water is leaking from the freezer vents into the fresh food compartment.

Whirlpool refrigerator (top freezer) is leaking into bottom of fridge. What can it be?

Hi, read about your problem. What's happening is your drain in the freezer compartment in the back behind wall is plugged. Defrost water then builds up under freezer floor and freezes. To fix, remove back wall. Also the floor needs to be opened up. Use a blow dryer to clear ice out of drain, in the trough, and under the floor. Hope this helps

My top freezer is producing ice on the floor of the freezer and water is dripping from the freezer to the loer level of the refrigerator.

Your defrost drain hole is frozen over. It must be thawed out.
You can turn the fridge off and let it sit off for 2 days and it will thaw. Or, you can disassemble the freezer panels and use a hair dryer to defrost the drain line at the rear of the freezer compartment. Takes about 2 hours.

Samsung Fridge Freezer leaking water

hi August.
Cause: A blocked defrost drain is one of the most common causes of water leakage. This happens when food particles or other debris clogs up the drain hose, which can lead to ice buildup and, eventually, water leaking out of the freezer and refrigerator.
3 common refrigerator problems you can easily fix yourself

The freezer drain hose will drain the defrost water into a drip pan at the bottom of the freezer. When this pan becomes full, it will leak water onto the floor. This is a regular maintenance task whenever the freezer defrosts. Empty the drip pan during the defrost cycle.
How to Fix Water Leaking From the Bottom of Freezer

Why is my fridge leaking water on the floor? If the refrigerator is leaking water it's possible that the refrigerator has a clogged or freezing defrost drain. If the defrost drain freezes the defrost water will overflow the drain and drip down to the bottom of the compartment, If enough water accumulates in the bottom it can run out onto the floor.
