It sounds like the nylon nut which holds the handle in place is too tight. Try loosening that nylon nut just a little to see if the handle moves easier. Sometimes if they are over-tightened, the handle will be stiff and hard to operate.
Make sure your control settings are correct, you may have a blend door issue, stick your head under dash on both sides and move the hot to cold control and see if anything isnmoving
there is a tiny reset button on the very bottom of the disposal. get a flashlight and a pencil or something. look under cabinet on the very bottom of the unit will be a small reset button. push to reset. if it keeps tripping the button and shutting off. use a broom handle. not your hand, to stick down the disposal drain and jar the blades loose. after that. run full blast with water. turn on disposal. while its running, flush ice, or orange peels down the disposal to clean... the ice will scrub it all and orange peels will clean and deodorize.
If it's electrical powered, you may have to spray alcohol in the buttons to free them, if urin or other contaminants have gotten behind them to make them stick to were there stuck.
I had the same problem. The fix cost me 50 cents (literally). I just placed a quarter on top of the Blue and White flush buttons (not sure of the technical terms) inside the tank and now it flushes properly. It seems that the 2 plastic poles the extend from the faux chrome buttons are just a bit too short.
Hope this helps
