It's either in your TV settings or you could try some of the generic codes such as 0000 1234 9999

All symptoms show that cable box is cause of problem, not sure that its internale circuit problem (signal processing in cable box) or its getting distorted signal from cable company.
TV sounds good because it works fine with blu ray player that is HD signal as well.
Change cable box just to confirm it.
I hope this tv would be under warranty so ask nearest Sony service to update its firmware under warranty cover that might fix the issue.

Vertical out transistors bad solder, or return linearity capacitor bad (a large capacitor, usually between 1000uf and 2200uf.) They're near where yellow and brown wires from picture tube connect to main board. They are larger transistors.

Yes this thing start happening to my tv too about 4weeks ago and this goes away in about 15 minutes. TV is only 18 month old and I donot have extende warranty. Please post the solution if someone has got it repaired. Thanks

if you have a cable box then it is probably the resolution settings in the cable box, what type of cable box do you have

are you using hdmi leads and how are you recieving hd are you recieving it through a box

The Sony "S" series is not HD compatible in any way. To see an HD program you would require an HD down-conversion box. This would make the pictures look like regular TV, but may have some distortions because of the 16:9 scan ratio from the HD programs, unless you model series is 16:9 compatible.

Check video out, Q705, 732, 761 and other components on the Cboard, also check Q218, 219, 220 on the A board. In addition, unit could be in IK blanking.
