This one sounds like the defrost timer is not working and you are not getting a defrost cycle every 6-8 hours (or when needed). Another issue could be that air (moisture) is getting in from a leaky door seal, etc. and causing the freeze up. If you have a sealed system problem where the cooling coils are not uniformly frosted up then the defrost thermostat will not "know" there is an ice condition and therefore not go into defrost mode (same issue if the defrost t-stat is bad). After you have ALL the ice out of the unit it would be a good idea to take the interior rear cover off so you can view the coils. Start the freezer back up and watch over the next 1/2 hour or so to see that the entire coil is frosting up uniformly. If it isn't you may have a plugged system, a leak causing low refrigerant, etc. If over time the coils look uniformly frosted up you may have a defective defrost heating element itself (no heat, no defrost sort of thing). The defrost elements can be checked with a multimeter for continuity if you know how to do that sort of thing. It's hard to know a person's ability by these forums or if they can tackle certain test procedures.

SOURCE: My freezer is freezing at the bottom but is not at

Short on refrigerant would be a good starting point, pressure temp relationship should be tested by an opperative.

The lower half of the freezer is cold but not the top. There is no air blowing ou the top vent. What should I do?

Hello friend, thanks for your inquiry!

I understand that the top of your Frigidaire freezer is not cold but the lower half is. I would recommend to perform a defrost on your freezer, I understand that it is a frost free freezer but it could be that maybe something has caused it to freezer over. You can perform a manual defrost by unplugging your appliance for four to six hours. If that is unsuccessful and you are still not getting cooler temperature up top I would seek assistance from a professional to come out and diagnose your appliance. -Matt

Upper part of freezer not freezing

  • When the top half of a freezer is not working properly it is a sign that the air circulation within the freezer is not functioning. In other words, the freezer refrigerant is still working properly, but the cold air it produces isn't going anywhere: Instead, it is sinking to the bottom of the freezer (heat rises) where it does an excellent job of keeping that half of the freezer cold while missing the top section entirely.

  • The air circulation problem is usually caused by a fan issue. Find where your fan connects to the refrigerant system and pumps the air out into the freezer. If the fan blades are stuck or frozen, you may be able to loosen them or replace the fan. If the fan works mechanically but does not turn on the problem lies with the motor instead. In this case, you can replace the motor or call a professional it may also be fan or evaporator

Top half does not freeze

There is a fan behind the back wall of the freezer about 1/2 way up from the bottom, you should be able to hear this running when the freezer is on. If you do not hear this then you need a new evaporator fan motor.

If you hear the fan run then you most likely have a problem with the automatic defrost cycle that would most likely be the heat element that is located just below the coils inside the freezer behind the panel.

My upright freezer is only keeping the bottom half cold. What could be wrong? Any suggestions?

us the internal fan running? press the light switch on the door and listen for it to run.
Your evaporator could be all clogged with frost as well.

Freezer cold but not freezing. coils are frozen.

If every coil , from the bottom one to the top one, are frozen, either the door is not closing right or the defrost timer is bad , but if half or less part of the coil is frozen , that means the unit is low in refrigerant and the leak has to be repair ( this is a seal system ) and after that recharge the system.

Upright freezer

If it has a fan in the freezer it need to be running to circulate the cold air.
If the coils are not icing up evenly from top to bottom you have a system low on freon.
The light frosting is normal.
A model number would really help to troubleshoot the problem.
