By "crow's nest" are your referring to bird nesting? What happens is the top thread creates a mess of thread under the fabric. It is a top thread issue, not bobbin.
Remove the top thread from the machine.
ALWAYS RAISE the presser foot and rethread from the beginning.
Set the top tension at the midway point and retest your machine. Adjust the top tension until the top and bobbin threads meet in the middle of the fabric.
If you need further assistance with tension, the following may help:
Understanding Thread Tension Threads If the fabric is not feeding, then check the feed dogs. Are they moving backward, dropping, moving forward and then rising again? If not, then something is amiss with the feed dog mechanism. Check to make sure the feed dogs have not been dropped for darning. Another thing is make sure the stitch length is set high enough to actually advance fabric. There is also a presser foot pressure adjustment that, on your machine, is probably inside the top cover. There is a big screwhead directly above the presser foot. This can increase or decrease the pressure the presser foot applies to the fabric. Another possibility is that the feed dog teeth may be worn down with use.
Since yours is an older machine and possibly has not been used and oiled frequently, mechanisms may have seized over time.
