i was told that between 9 to 12 psi is normal on all pool pumps.
SOURCE: cloudy brown dirt getting in my pool from sand pump
The dirt you are getting is most likely from the air, dirt and dust present in rainwater and the small amounts present on human bodies. It is settling out and going to the bottom. If the water is beginning to clear up, it doesn't sound like you have done anything wrong. You might just need to let your pool filter keep working. I would
a) make sure that your pH, chlorine, and alkalinity levels are correct. An inproper balance of chemicals might be causing the cloudyness.
b) Be sure Vari-Flo valve is set on “Filter” position.
c) Operate filter for longer periods.
d) Make sure that the flow rate through filter is sufficient.
e) Continue to backwash frequently.
