Whenever you connect your camera to PC it acts as a mass storage devise which make it inaccessible to camera. In theory you camera is ON but cant access the pictures stored on SD card. If your camera offers some internal memory then you can still access pics stored in internal memory.
I hope it helps !

As soon as you connect a camera to a computer, the camera shuts down, because it only can act as a "dumb" memory stick.
Only more advanced camera's and special programs allow the camera to be connected and be monitored on a computer.
Nikon has Camera Control Pro 2 for its DSLRs. Only the software is over 100 dollars.

When you have installed Kodak Picture easy software, you can connect the camera to the computer and then after you switch on the camera, you can download the pictures from the camera to the PC.

Your camera becomes a peripheral object which the computer should 'see' and prompt you for an action. If not, your camera will charge as it remains plugged into a USB port - the previous response covers most of this. Sciencewoman

Camera saying connection fail when trying to transfer photos to pc via usb cable

Try NOT connecting your camera to your computer.

The best way to download pictures from your camera to your computer involves removing the memory card from the camera and plugging it into a card reader (either built-in to the computer or connected via USB). This is likely to be faster than connecting the camera to the computer, and won't run down your camera's batteries.

Once the card is plugged in, it will appear to your computer as a removable drive. You can use the operating system's drag&drop facility to copy pictures from the card to the computer's hard drive, the same way you copy any other files. Or you can use any photo management program such as Picasa ( http://picasa.google.com ).

Why my Nikon Coolpix L26 isnt uploading to computer via usb to PC

When you connect the USB cable from the camera to the PC, the camera should shut down. If it doesn't perhaps your cable is defect. Or one of the connectors, from the camera or from the PC.
When the cable works on another PC (or Laptop) you can assume the cable is good. But then the USB connector in the PC could be not connected, or the USB controller in the PC is not working correct.
Sure you did install the Nikon software on the PC to?

I have a GC-XA2BU and the camera will not cut on? I have purchased a replacement battery but neither work.

As soon as you connect a camera to a computer, it will stop working, because the USB connection will be used to charge the battery.
If your computer is not correct wired on the USB port, or when you are using a hub, without an external power supply, the battery will not be charged. So you end up with an empty battery and a camera that does not respond.
Try charging the battery on an external charger and remove the USB cable, before switching on the camera. Also check if the USB connector on the camera is free. Avoiding the camera to "think" there is still a USB cable connected.

How do you recharge camera battery? camera manual is not clear abot how to hook up battery charger or even where it is!

The easiest way is by using a standard USB cable...plug the small end of the USB cable into your camera (located under the headphone jack) then plug the larger end of the USB cable into your PC or laptop. Turn on your computer & this will charge up your Vivitar 550.

When I hook up my Little Shots Camera it says can not connect to device

Uninstall all old pc cam, mars software and do a fresh installation. Restart computer. Before plugging in usb cable, push the shutter button down and hold it.Shutter is the button that takes the pictures. Now plug in usb cable. Camera should say pc cam and installation of software should start and complete. If asked about newer reference files answer yes. Software should now be installed. To use as pc cam,Dbl Click pc cam, mars icon on the desktop.New screen will appear.click on right facing triangle and another screen will open. Camera will now show on monitor what it is aimed at.To shut off, close all screens, and click on icon tray and shut usb device if necessary. To use as camera and view pictures, connect usb cable without pushing any buttons, and camera will say usb,Dbl click my computer, dbl click removable disk D,E F whichever it has been assigned, dbl click DCIM folder, and there are your pics to do waht you want with, save, print etc.Do not delete pics using the computer, delete only by camera so you do not damage files necessary to store and take pictures. If you do camera may have to be reformatted.Disconnect from pc same way by clicking usb icon in tray and stopping device, then its safe to unplug cable.
