There are two or more types,
1: provided the spool is full and wound on correctly, to increase the length of nylon you tap the head of the snipper on the ground while it's spinning. This should release extra cutting string.
2: others are simply feed by the centrifugal force governed by a spring in the head. When you wrap the nylon string around the spool, then feed the nylon out the holes provided, the weight of the nylon string pulls the required amount of nylon out so you can continue to work.
Others are manual, simply pull the nylon out by hand to the desired length.
Note that you are only cutting with the very tip of the nylon string, not the full length.

spring probably broke for recoil, will have to pull the 4 screws holding it on and and pull recoil off you might get lucky as you loosen the bolts it might retract, if it does it is dirty inside and possible nylon guides wore causing it to bind. otherwise spring prob broke inside
They don't spin with the engine, however pinning them together isn't your fix. The spring has to be fixed at both ends, sounds like one end or the other is comming out of its keeper. Check if the ends are broken
• Turn off the trimmer and remove the battery • Press the release tabs on the line spool cover and remove the cover by pulling it straight off. replacement spool is AF-100 • Lift the spool of nylon line out of the hub and clear any broken line and debris • In case of jams and tangled line unwrap about one foot (30cm) of line to ensure that it is undamaged. If it is OK rewind it and insert the line end through the eyelet in the spool hub. • Pull the line through the hole to maintain tension while placing the spool down into the hub with the notched side exposed. • Press the spool down GENTLY and rotate it until you feel it drop into place. (When in place, the spool will turn a few degrees left and right freely.) • Snap the spool cover back on.
For Black and Deckers: Remove cup from bottom of unit by depressing 2 detent tabs and pulling away from unit. Replace empty spool with new full one or wind on aftermarket string. Wind in direction of arrow on spool. Make sure spool is seated on rachet firmly.
There is a spring under the starter spool, the one with the rope on it, leave the spring ALONE, Just take the spool and replace the rope as it is. You take the spool off, put the new rope on the spool, place the spool onto the spring and by holding one end of the rope straight up in one of the slots on the spool, go as many times as you can. When you have it as tight as it can go, hold your thumb down on the spool. Insert the rope through the hole available, grab the rope on the other side of the hole, (outside the casing). Hold the rope and S-L-O-W-L-Y allow the rope to retract. If it finishes before the rope runs out, pull on the rope and install the handle. If it tries to go beyond, hold the rope and install the handle there. Hope you have luck. Remember, leave the spring alone...Lee

Hi there, takes a bit of working out without a manual, but try this....take bottom half of trimmer line spool off, get piece of spool line approx 60 cm, long and thread through centre holes, ( bit fiddly but ) pull line through until you have equal length on both sides, dont try and wind it up onto the spool, just put ends of line through outside cover holes, then lock spool in place in other half. now simply wind the knob at the end and the line should retract into the spool., sounds complicated but really isnt, best regards and good luck, Philbee
