Game freezes what may be problems

it is locked up after startup and wont go any further

  • Anonymous Jan 26, 2008

Samething happens to me. I have done everything from holding the power down for 6-8 seconds and reseting the video to trying every resolution possible with every video connection combination. I leave it off for a bit and I turn it on and it is working. If I leave it on then it freezes after awhile. I am past my year warranty which sucks. I guess I might as well open it up and hope for the best.

  • j0sh8830 Jun 05, 2008

ok, i'm still under warranty, but heres what happenes...i was playing a game the other day....and it froze solid...restarted it and tried again..it worked a little later just to freeze about 15 minutes after that...i got an error message that the application failed to start when i tried running the game again...my system seems to be working fine, my downloaded demos still work...but any game ive tried like stops reading the disk and freezes, the same goes for dvds i have tried, i got about a month of warranty..has anyone experienced this problem? should i send it in to get repaired or is there a fix?

my ps3 freeze two seconds when start, as this video http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=gaS-nf0yhD...

  • Anonymous Jul 04, 2008

Totally Freezes. Power button doesn't work, but Game or DVD will eject. Must use the switch in back to turn it off and even after letting it sit for awhile, it tries to start then Freezes. Mine is 80 GB version with latest update & bought in Feb 08. Anyone else?

  • karlgent Jul 13, 2008

I have a similar problem. I have the original 20 gb japanese PS3 and a few months ago it would freeze; often with pixels appearing over the screen first.

When I turned the switch on and off my TV would read NO SIGNAL for a while and I would have to eventually reprogram the PS3 to my TV after around 30 minutes.

I also noticed that I would get a scan line running up my screen after it worked again every minute or so and it would freeze again after 10 minutes to an hour.

I moved my PS3 away from any nearby items and it seemed to work; although this was around the same time as a system update, so I'm not sure what the real fix was.

However, recently it has started happening again; I have kept my console free from any obstructions and installed update 2.41.

The original problem happened when watching LOST season 3 and some other blu rays and it is happening now with Metal Gear Solid 4. Don't know if the discs have anything to do with it but I doubt it.

Does anyone have this same problems or symptoms? Is it an overheating or system problem? Will an intercooler fix it?

Any help would be greatly appreciated as my warranty has long expired. Cheers

From time to time my PS3 just freeze and the only solution is to turn it off/on.
I don't know what is the reason because sumtimes I can play for hours and it's ok but sumtimes it's just freezes after few minutes.

    I played:
Resistant Fall of man - Never freeze
Ninja Gaide 2 - Never freeze
    Heavenly sword - Never freeze
Icon - Freeze after few minutes
GTAIV - Also freezes after few minutes

Also sumtimes when I plug in usb this happends..
So can sum tell what to do?

I had a problem with a 40gb PS3 purchased in May 08 in which the lights were on, but nobody was home (black screen, no sound).  I took it back to the store I bought it along with a product replacement plan and got an 80gb replacement with no questions asked.  In less than a month, the 80gb is freezing and/or not recognizing games and bluray movies.  WTF!!!  I'm about to take it back for my 3rd ps3 in 6 months.  Ridiculous!

  • Anonymous Dec 12, 2008

My Ps3 has started freezing up nomatter what im doing on it, gaming, browsing, PSstore, messaging, or just navigating the XMB. I assumed it was due to Bethesda's **** quality games, (the 1st time it froze in-game was in ES IV: Oblivion, no issues outside of that game, then it started again in Fallout 3) but the recent freezes like ive allready said leave me clueless, especially since all my data (saves, games, vids, music, pics) dissapeard too (oddly my memory usage was still 10GB/55GB, the same as before)

so will everything lost, i did a full reformat that took 3 hours and succesfully made it appear brand new, except for the freezing issue thats exactly the same as before, although the memory usage is now 47GB/55GB

i know this is pretty lengthy, but its a complex problem

    HELP!!!

  • txman74 Dec 13, 2008

  • redsox_245 Jan 09, 2009

I have a similar problem but i only have been playing online games so im not sure if that is the problem or not. Sometimes hours in or just 20 or 30 minutes in the controller doesnt respond and the game continues but nothing happens. Then the 4 lights start blinkng and it never connects. If I leave the system on it eventually will freeze up. I have been playing with the controller plugged into the usb charge cord and that seemed to be a fix, but it still happens. When it does happen its usually bad for a day and then good for a few. Its a cycle that repeats and its startin to make me think theres a serious problem. Anyone with any suggestions?

I have solved my game and xmb crashing on my PS3.
First delete any demos that you do not intend to play anymore.
I deleted the Heavenly Sword Demo that I had downloaded recently.
Make sure that you have at least 50% of the hard drive space free.
I have about 43gigs available in my 80 gig hard-drive.
Put your demos, music, vids in a folders. It will make the ps3 start-up quicker.
Clean your game discs with a micro-fiber cloth.
My MGS4 disc used to freeze but I cleaned the fingerprints and it works just as new.
Clean the ps3 from dust. Use a micro-fiber cloth and use vacuum accessories to **** the dust from the grills and fans.

That is all. If this helped anyone or if you have other solutions put it in this post.
Good luck PS3 owners. ;)

You and most all PS3 owners have or will experience this problem. Your Heat Transfer compound is dried up. This to me is a definite Manufacturer Defect. Contact Sony at 1800 345-7669 unless your outside North America. If you know how to get to the heat sinks, I suggest you go there and put some new high quality Heat Transfer compound between your processors and the heat sinks.

A possible soulution would be to turn your ps3 off from the switch in the back, hold the eject button, and while still holding it, switch it back on. it will turn on a fan for about 30 seconds. make sure there is no disk in the system when you do this, just in case. This should clean up any dust or dirt in the system.

I had the same problem with my system. After I did an update, the games would work for about 5 minutes and then freeze. All I had to do was reformat the system and it works flawlessly now. Transfer your data onto a USB drive and then do the reformat. I strongly believe 99% of your ps3 problems can be fixed at home with the right amount of research. Don't listen to people who claim it's a manufacturer issue and there's nothing you can do about it. If it truly was a manufacturer's defect then your ps3 would likely not have worked right from the beginning.

I had the same problem and it was the heat. The circuit board on the hard drive melted and I had to replace it. This might be due to the 5 hour game fests I had on Call Of Duty! LOL!

The first thing you should be doing is BACKING EVERYTHING UP! Second invest in a fan for the unit. I have one that fixes to the front through the USB port, which works quite well.

I'm sure you've fixed it by now but this might help others.

After I posted my comments I filled out the On Line Warranty form then called Sony. I received the pre paid return for repair box and decided as a last shot, to simply try a system reset, which apparently worked because I haven't had the same problem since. I still have the box, just in case....Sony informed me that I would not get my original unit back, so rather than chance losing all save data (which I know I can and have backed up) I am not comfortable with all my PSN info being in there for possible breach. So at this point, a reset worked for me and all updates since have been flawless.
Good Luck

Ok so iv had my ps3 for a few years , and recently it has been freezeing up well I try to game "Both online and offline*
Now iv been racking my brain around this problem for some time , Iv rebooted , cleared the memory etc and nothing worked ,,, So I desided I had one more thing i could do , I took it apart , "Doing this will void your ps3 warrnty , When i opened it there was alot of dust ,,, Guys keep it dust free its important but as i took the cooling fan off "Which i must say was HUGE!* I noticed there was white paste on the chips , Know I reserched what this is and its thermil paste that is used to transfer the heat from the chips to the cooling point so they dont over heat , The paste was dryed up and useless , So Im thinking with most freeze up this is the problem , However from what iv read online if left to long the chips can be just fryed and done for , But I hope this might help some people out there My PS3 is the old model "the giant ps3*
This is really the only thing i can think of why its messing up so if your ps3 is messed like mine maybe give it a look and see .

I had the same problem. I was keeping my PS3 in a cabinet under the TV. I moved it to a table, keeping it in the open. I think my problem was that the PS3 was getting too hot and not enough ventolation and air movement was causing the freezing.
Since I moved it in the open - no problems.

What it all comes down to is overheating, The PS3 has a ton of parts packed into a small shell and not enough flow. Try setting it in a cool place but, nowhere it will recieve percipitation or it could fry. Lower the case temperature and see what happens.

You may half to clean it if you have a 60 or 80 gig turn your ps3 on and it it upsidown so the fan it aming toward the ground the wait, it will not over heat wait about 30 to 40 seconds if your have a forty gig turn the switch the the ps3 off and put your finger over the eject button turn it on and let the dust clear out. if none of this works get ito your ps3 and clean it (carefuly!) and if that doesnt work your screwed! thwn go get another one or try to have someone fix it for you. and make sure its not close to any weird objects if may mess it up!!

You need to open the PS3 and clean the eye in the blue ray player... walkthroughs are available on Facebook.

And if it freezes when turned on just hold down power button for 3 beeps then release, wait about thirty seconds, hold down power button again for three beeps (third beep should be a double beep). this will bring you to the BIOS on the PS3. Just rebuild the file system, restore the system, basically all the options there. You will loose all files on the system but at least it will work.

You might have turned it off at the rear switch during an important save or somthing like a loading screen which may have caused this maulfunction to occur.

I know this Forum might be closed, but after playin Dragon Age: Origins for a few hours I paused the game and came back to it later (turned off TV of course) and started playing again, since then every few hours it freezes, but I can still hear the music. I ran the fan on the PS3 but havent tried it yet. Would that do the trick?

Earlier this year my hdmi port went out on my out of warranty original ps3. I the 2 replacements have both constantly froze during game play. I only play COD4 and WaW. It has never froze during dvd and blueray movies but at the same time never once froze with the original ps3 when playing games.

Tried the heat sink compound replacement however this didn't improve matters. I did notice it dried up a fair bit. My next step is to try the cooler fan that Nyko has manufactured. I also need to use a temperature gauge to see exactly what temperature the system is running. It may be that I am too late that gpu has kick the can. Any one have and extra gpu chip for a ps3?

Turn off the console and try again. If its still not working try putting it in a well ventalited area with cool air. leave for an hour or 2. then try in ventalited area.

Well yeah, but really the ideal condition for the heat sink is between 2 degrees Celsius and 28 degrees celsius, have you thought about changing the A/C compressor to a higher ratio to handle the higher CPU output of the cell processor switch. I can come over and show you how to handle this.

SOURCE: PS3 having trouble reading game discs!!!

hey guys. the problem is that the blue ray reader is some how broken and it won't work. mine kept freezing during games like after 3 mins. and it wouldnt read any more discs for that day. you need to change the blue ray reader and that costs about 175$. thats alot of money and its probably not worth it.

SOURCE: My ps3 freezes in the middle of games and movies.

Hi, try running a cd/dvd laser lens cleaner through it. You can get those anywhere for around $3.00. If it still does the same thing after cleaning the lens, then I'm afraid your laser is starting to go out and will need replaced soon.

Testimonial: "Thanks! I'll try it tomorrow (to tired). They have youtube videos on how to clean the lens right? Using clean, purified water should work too."

SOURCE: My ps3 freezes in the middle of games and movies.

Hey guys i had this same problem 2 times the second time being tonight and i fixed it both times! I don't usually post on forums but im just trying to help out here i know it can be really frustrating when this happens. Anyways what i did to fix the problem is lift the ps3 a couple inches off the ground and gently drop it so the dust or w.e it is in the ps3 settles n fixes. The second time this happened (tonight) i tried dropping it again and it didn't work, it really got me mad, but then i tried dropping it again this time upside down and after 1 drop it worked. anyways hope this helps :)

Freezing

for freezing problems... try to move your system away from areas that are often hot, blocking the vents, or blocking air movement. the main culprit for freezing issues is over heating. if your system becomes too hot it will flash green and red where your power button is. so if your having trouble with that problem follow those steps.
