How do I discharge microwave capacitor

Most of the time there is a bleed off resistor that will take care of any charge that might be stored in the capacitor, but they can and do fail. I used to have a training video on how to work on microwaves and the procedure they recommended to discharge the capacitor was to take two large screwdrivers and put one on each tab on the capacitor and then cross the screwdriver blades so that they touch. If you get a spark, that tells you that it was storing power and you have now discharged that power, also lets you know the bleed off resistor has possibly failed. If there is no spark, then it has already been discharged and is safe to remove. Hope this helps.

Discharging a high voltage capacitor<br /><br />Discharging your microwave's capacitor is absolutely essential in preventing injury to your microwave, your tools, and yourself. A capacitor stores large amounts of electricity even when your microwave is unplugged, and it must be discharged before beginning any repair.<br /><br />A capacitor is discharged by creating a short circuit between each of the two capacitor terminals, and between each terminal and the chassis. The chassis is the metal mounting (bare metal surface) of the capacitor. Read these directions thoroughly before you proceed.<br /><br />With your microwave unit unplugged, touch the blade of a well insulated screwdriver to one terminal. Gently slide the screwdriver forward until it reaches the other terminal, holding it there for a few seconds. Be aware that this often results in a loud and startling 'POP'.<br /><br />Repeat this procedure in order to create a short circuit between each capacitor terminal and the chassis (bare metal mounting plate surface). This same method can be applied to a capacitor having three, and not two, terminals.<br /><br />I hope this helps.<br />

How do you discharge the the capacitor

Simplest way I have done it is to take two screwdrivers and put one on each tab on the capacitor and cross the shafts and touch the shafts together. Another effective way is to take a pair of needle nose pliers that have a very good rubber handle and spread the nose of the pliers and touch the two tabs at the same time. If you do not have any spark the capacitor should already be discharged.

Difficult to give specific instructions without knowing the model of the appliance.

In general, to replace the bulb you have to open the chassis sheet metal that is secured with screws on the back.
IMPORTANT: BEFORE YOU DO ANY WORK ON AN OPEN MICROWAVE, YOU NEED TO DISCHARGE THE CAPACITOR WHICH STORES A HIGH VOLTAGE. If you are not sure of how to do this, it is better to get the service done by a professional. You can search online for "Discharging Microwave Capacitor"

The problem is a open high voltage diode on the high voltage capacitor, this link will help you in repairing or testing the diode yourself, CAUTION!! The high voltage capacitor must be discharged before attempting any repairs or testing, discharge by shorting the posisitive terminal to ground. the diode is attached to one of the terminals of the capacitor and the other end to ground.

Hi newer microwave ovens have a built in resistor to bleed the power from the capacitor once it is unplugged. Saying this it is always a good safety practice to discharge it.

The factory approved method is to purchase a 2 Watt, 20,000 ohm resistor and touch it across the terminals on the microwave capacitor to discharge, doing this with a tool like pliers so you are not touching the metal tips of the resistor.

Most technicians will use pliers that have insulated handles and touch the tips to the capacitor. I am not condoning that, just letting you know.

I don't know where you got the information that the high voltage capacitor takes 24 hours to discharge. The capacitor will actually discharge after a few minutes. If in doubt as to whether or not a capacitor is still charged, however, you should short the capacitor to discharge it. You do this by fashioning yourself a grounding probe:

1. Take a screwdriver and a set of alligator clips with a wire.

2. Connect an alligator clip to either end of the wire.

3. Connect one clip to the screwdriver and the other end to equipment ground.

4. Short the screwdriver across the capacitor terminals.

If the capactor casing is grounded (mounted to the equipment chassis) you only need to take a screwdriver and touch each across each terminal to the capacitor case.

CAUTION: Make sure the unit is UNPLUGGED prior to servicing any components inside the HV network. The HV network consists of the HV Capacitor, Magnetron, HV Diode and HV Transformer.

Befor you do anything you need to read up on how to discharge a high voltage capacitor so that you avoid all sort of injury as well as death. Once you have read up on how to discharge the high voltage capacitor, you simply remove thecasing of the microwave, discharge the high voltage capacitor, once that is done, you are safe to locate and replace the bulb, To obtain a bulb contact your closest Sanyo authorised repair agent, they should either have one in stock or they will be able to order one for you.. Locating capacitor and diode to discharge capacitor

Alot of the Panasonic models had the Transformer and Capacitor and Diode built into the power board situated bottom right as you look at the appliance.
Dont know of a way to actually discharge this arrangement.

How do i discharge the capacitor?

It's always best to discharge a capacitor through a 10K ohm resistor. Just touch it across both terminals for about 10 seconds.

Otherwise, you can use a screw driver, but you risk ruining the screwdriver and maybe flying chunks of steel if there is enough stored energy.
