I have never been able to get my DVI input on input one to work since new. I have a huge surround sound Yamaha receiver and used the component hookups and ran digital optical cables from my directv HD

What could be the problem? I have tried to eliminate all the obvious so I am wondering if I have to go into tv menu and turn on the DVI input? I have spent a lot of time in the setup menu but cant find anything like that to work with. I am 100 percent disabled and my tv and movies are my entertainment lol, and now I have none. HELP?

While Bluray pluged into the TV change the resolution from AUTO to 720P then plug Bluray back to the receiver and see if it solve your problem.

DVD PLAYER to TV HOOKUP

57b6c82.jpg

Basic DVD player hookup to TV cable diagram. RCA cable (yellow) video and RCA cables (white and red) audio. This is all you need for picture and sound. If your TV only has a single RF input, then you need a RF modulator. RF modulators accept the yellow, white and red cables and output a coaxial cable to the TV single input jack. Usually the TV is tuned to channel 3 or 4 to pickup the RF modulators output.

Alternative connection options are many and include HDMI for HDTVs, component video and for sound, surround sound digital audio connection using optical or coaxial digital audio cable.

Surround sound requires a decoder such as a A/V receiver with Dolby Digital 5.1 or DTS 5.1 or more. 6 speakers connected to the A/V receiver surrounds the listener.

Bluray players will play DVDs and Bluray discs. Bluray gives you High Definition video and typically connects to a HDTV using a HDMI cable.

I have a receiver yamaha and can't get it connected right. i get a video from s-video or AV input, but not thru the component. also only two speakers work. i need to change settings. but manual doesn't...

When you connect through component are you using three RCA cables for the video only as component is Y,Cr,Cb which is discrete luminance and color information.
vinayak_nair_22.jpg
If you don't connect all three then you might get a black and white image, the cable is color coded RGB or red, green, blue and all three are required for video only and other than that a separate red and white to connect audio.

About the audio problem how are you connecting the audio are you using the Red and White cable , if so then you will only get Stereo or Dolby Surround audio which is Virtual Surround out of the stereo input. To get full surround sound you will have to either use discrete 5.1 channel inputs to the receiver to get actual discrete sound per channel or you could also use SPDIF to get multichannel audio through one cable. Most players support digital out now a days.

How to set up a sony suround sound to a tv!!!! without the manual

it depends on the model #, and where your tv gets its feed source.( dish network, comcast, ant, vcr, dvd player, etc)I have a sony surround with no manual and set it up my self. look on the back where the components hookup to if there is a yellow, white, and red on the input, that is where your feed should hookup to, and there should be a monitor out to your tv,( a yellow video plug ). if your surround does not have a yellow on the input it will bypass the surround and go to tv video in

Audio but no video from Sony Blu-Ray w/ HDMI hookup to RX-V663

Okay...my first contribution to any forum but I have the same problem (Yamaha RX-V663 and Samsung Blu Ray) and found the solution. The problem is you probably have your HDMI cables from your DVD player and reciever connected to a DVI input on your TV. The DVI may have problems communicating--not HDCP compliant. My system was working great then I hit a button on my remote...just playing around. I think it was the pure audio and I turned off the receiver. After that, the audio worked but there was no video. After many frustrating hours, the fix was to unplug the HDMI and DVI cable then turn the power off, cycle the power again, and plug the HDMI and DVI cables back in (the DVI was the last cable plugged in, not sure if that matters). By unplugging everthing you've reset the communication between the HDMI components and the DVI TV.

See page 18 of the yamaha owners manual, second to last note on bottom right of the page. It says there may be a problem...

I also noticed that the yamaha reciever was sending 1080p (my older tv is 1080I) and that is why the video wouldn't display on the TV. You can see this in the video signal info screen, unfortunately there is no setting to switch it back, just recycle the cables and power and it should reset.

Uncredibly frustrating but I got my picture back!

Yamaha RX-V663 wont play rear surround

The best way to get Dolby sound working is to connect the components using the optical links.
As long as you are using PCM the Dolby sounds will never get to your system. It's switching the Dolby sound off as soon as it detects PCM. I think the only way you will get Dolby on is via a optical cable which should let you have bitstream.

Hooking up a sony playstation 3 with digital optical cable

Here's one solution, if you have an audio output from your tv, you can go from the audio output on your tv to the audio input on your receiver that way anything that is playing on your tv for example, playstation 3, dvd player etc. Anything playing on your tv will have audio on your onkyo home theater system. The other thing I would try if you want to hook ps3 directly to receiver is go to your connection settings on your ps3 menu and change your connection method to digital optical cable.
