I had the same problem Poulan 550 It would start fine, start getting slower and slower then stall. Then it would not start for about 30-40
minutes than same thing. I put and new plug (set the gap with my handy gage) then took off the air filter and sprayed carb cleaner right into the carb. bowl. Put it all back and same thing.
But while it was starting to slow down I had a screw driver with me and with the engine running i loosened the screw on the air leaner and the engine started to rev faster. loosened a little more and rev faster again. FInally pulled the air filter and finished the whole lawn
on one tank of gas. I cant believe the air filter can cause such an
issue. And the air filter looked clean. Time to try a new one

I have a John Deere JS30 self propelled lawn mower I had issues with it running for 15 minutes and then it stops running. Was low on oil. Added oil over the full line now it runs for 3 min and dies

Wayne, correct your oil level to full line, change your spark plug and try mower. If still acting up after a couple minutes, the Gas cap vent may be plugged, remove or loosen cap to see if mower will run longer and better. If no improvement, the carburetor is dirty and needs cleaned or rebuilt.

Lawn Mower runs rough & dies has black sooty spark plugs

A good place to start would be to remove air cleaner assembly and give it a good wash and service and take a close look at choke assembly/lever to be sure it isn't sticking in on position, while trying to run it with air filter off..
