The knob on the outside of your sewing machine will adjust the stitch length. I never have used mine set lower then between a 4 and 5. Anything lower then that makes stitches too small. Even though the machine will say 5 is for base stitching I always use that.
Now 6ou have to remember though that if you set it on 4 or 5 length you may have to adjust your bobbin tension also.
If you get loops on your top thread then you need to adjust your bottom tension since the bottom thread is to tight then.
good luck
Is 4 the highest number? If so, the steps you took were really all that you can do. Just a thought, how about using invisible thread (almost like a thin fishing line) for your top thread and regular thread in your bobbin? It may be easier to remove the stitches with the lighter thread. Good luck
I would suggest taking the machine back to the one you bought it from & see if they have another one that will calibrate ,,& if they don't have one ,, I suggest another sewing machine dealer.. or you can try contacting Phaff customer support by phone or email & see what they say
Most likely the upper tension dial is too high. Turn it to 4 and try pulling the thread through the needle and see if it moves easier than before. If not turn it to 3. This should be a good tension on your upper thread so it won't make the stitch so tight. Also, be sure that the thread spool holder isn't too tight against your spool of thread. Let me know if this works.
Call the place you had the machine serviced and tell them they did not get it fixed; you need to have them to look at it again - as you wait and at no additional charge unless a part has to be replaced.

i have started using my machine again (after several years) and am
doing patchwork.. all has been fine, and suddenly the bottom thread
(bobbin) is looping. i've adjusted the tension nob from 4 (where i had
it) to 5...back to 4.. 41/2....3 1/2....5 1/2... on and on and the
bottom thread still keeps looping.
i've read and re-read the manual...and the only suggestion it gives is to adjust the tension button.
it's not working...... what else can i try??
thanks

50 year old elnas made stitches by cams. look to see if the machine has a cam in it. you can see this by opening lid on top of machine. cams are black with red or white showing the pattern of the cam. could also have broken cam stack gear. That would require technician with elna experience
