I also have an AL-1551CS copier...normally the "L" has something to do with the scanner lock device underneath the left side of the top part (ie; the scanner) It's clear colored and round with protrusion to turn it from locked to unlocked...this is for moving the copier so the scanner (lamp and mirror assm) won't be disturbed. Use a flashlight or such to inspect the position of said device (ie; locked or unlocked) insure it is unlocked.....power back on and tell me if there is a number following the "L" Tim

There is a crystal lock under the scanner and on the top of the exit tray. just rotate the lock, makes sure that the front of the lock is on the direction of the scanner(to the right).

Scanner movement failure. The scanner is the part under the glass that lights up and moves back and forth. So if you lift up the feeder so you can see the glass, turn the machine off for a few seconds then back on. Watch the movement of the scanner. It should move right and inch or two then back to the left. If all goes well the copier should come to ready. Lay a piece of paper on the glass and press the print button to watch the scanner movement. If it binds up or does not scan correctly there are 2 possibilities.
1) your scanner lock is engaged and is preventing the scanner from moving. Check the clear plastic dial located under the far left upper side of the copier, near where the paper exits the machine. Make sure it is in the unlocked position.
2) Your scanner rail is dirty and dry. This rail can be seen under the glass towards the back of the copier. The scanner rides on this rail. It is very common for these to get dirty and for the grease to dry up causing the scanner to freeze up on the rail. The glass must be removed and the rail cleaned and lubricated.
