SOURCE: Pull-cord will not retract.

If you put a longer cord on it , then it will not retract as far and get stuck.

SOURCE: having hard time with new poulon 18" chainsaw starting.

Since you have good spark and good gas the only things left to check are the air filter and the carbeurator. If the air filter is dirty, replace it. While you are at the auto parts store also pick up a can of a gasoline additive called seafoam which will keep your carb. clean. Finally get a can of spray carb. cleaner and put a couple short squirts directly into the air intake which is right there when you remove the air filter.

SOURCE: Starter rope will not retract.

inside the rope pull housing is a flat spring,it may have come loose from its anchor, its an easy fix...unscrew the 3 screws on housing, lift off housing, and the rope pull is inside the casing, you will then see if its broken, or just come off anchor, 10 minute job if its just loose......

SOURCE: Can't pull the starter cord,

Hi and welcome to FixYa, I am Kelly
Remove the muffler and clean out the exhaust port and screen. You will have to disassemble the muffler and clean off or replace the screen item 8 of this link:
http://www.partstree.com/parts/?lc=echo&mn=CS-330T++S%2FN%3A+C08611001001+-+C08611999999&dn=7946

Before taking the muffler apart... unhook the spark plug and just pull it though with the muffler removed. If it pulls normally you know you have found the problem.

If it still pulls hard...check the exhaust port of the cylinder head for 2 tiny holes (not screw holes) Some have them some don't depending upon the year of the saw. If you do find 2 small holes that appear clogged with carbon... do your best to clean them out.

Thanks for choosing FixYa,
Kelly

PURCHASED BRAND NEW MS 311 SAW. HAVE SWITCH ON COLD START, HAVE PUSHED BLACK BUTTON IN ON TOP, AM PULLING THE CHORD LIKE THIRTY TIMES. CAN SMELL ALITTLE PETROL BUT IT WONT KICK OVER

Likely it is flooded. Try starting without choke. Move control lever into choke position, then back to start position. This sets a high idle throttle/no choke. Don't touch throttle or it will drop throttle position from high idle to idle. Set decompress and pull starter cord no more than 3x.

You may have to remove spark plug and pull start cord several times to get the excess fuel out of the cylinder and crankcase. Dry spark plug with compressed air or starter fluid. Reinstall spark plug. Pull starter cord no more than 3x. If it doesn't fire, remove plug and inspect tip. If completely dry, no fuel. If wet either no spark or it has flooded again, check for spark.

How to start jonsered 2172 chainsaw?

http://m.jonsered.com/ddoc/JONO/JONO2016_NAenNAesNAfr/JONO2016_NAenNAesNAfr__1153687-49.pdf

See page 20+. These saws are notorious for flooding at start. If it doesn't fire by the 3rd pull, stop, remove plug. If plug is wet its flooded. If dry, no fuel and as always, check it has spark.

I expect its flooding... a quick way to get the cylinder and crankcase cleared is to remove the spark plug AND AIR FILTER. Use low pressure air (~10 psi) into the plug hole for a few seconds. reinstall plug. Follow starting instructions.

If it floods again, repeat clear cylinder/crankcase, and follow starting instructions but don't use decompress.

Comment below and I'll assist further if need be.

Hard starting no fuel primer noise

Hi Jack:
You don't mention make or model so all I can do is relate 50 years of personal experience.
None of the chain saws that I have owned have had a fuel primer.
This has been (and continues to be for my Husky 266) my start routine. Current saws don't have compression release.
- prep includes fill fuel and oil tanks, check chain sharp and tension, bar tip lube.
- Ignition switch on
- Choke full on
- Throttle full and lock set.
- Pull starter cord *(266 takes 3 pulls, Homelite took 6) until engine fires. If I'm fast I can get the choke off before it dies, otherwise
- Choke off, Pull starter cord. Engine should start with 1 or 2 pulls.
Hope this helps.

U tube chainsaw pull cord wont pull start

Some saws with autotmatic oiling will leak bar oil into the cylinder and cause this. Pull out the spark plug and hold the saw so the oil runs out of the spark plug hole. Pull the starter cord till no more oil sprays out of the hole.Clean the oil off the plug and start your saw. It will smoke more than normal till the extra oil is burned out.

Husqvarna 372xp won't start... Mysterious

I recently bought a brand new 372XP and spent the first day trying to start it as per the instruction manual with no success, never even fired once. Removed the plug to find plenty of fuel and that the plug has a good spark. Left it until the next day mainly to allow my arm to recover (& scour the internet for clues). I found a forum that said not to use the decompressor and sure enough without the use of the decompressor button it fired first go with the choke on then I reset the choke & it ran properly on the second pull. The decompressor button can be reset with fine nosed pliers or removal of the top cover by undoing three screws. Good luck it's a great saw once you know how to start it.

Pull starter cord until it starts. When it starts it wii be at full R.P.Ms. Let run for twenty to thirty seconds. then move switch to run. Hope his helps, Thanks

After starting and operating the chainsaw for a short time, it dies and I can't get it started again. Suggestions?

Engines require 3 things. Spark, compression and fuel. And chainsaw need 2-cycle oil mixed with the gas.

Assuming you have the right oil-gas mixture and a fresh batch of gas, and you didn't leave old gas in the saw all summer long since last November.

-Take off the dirty air filter and see if saw starts without filter. Do not run without putting in new filter.
-Check exhaust port for mud dobber home or screen clogged with carbon and dirt
-See if saw fires up after squirting WD-40 directly into carburetor
-Check gas line >>> pull gas line loose and see if gas flows out of tank to carburetor
-Take out spark plug > put finger over spark hole and pull cord >> do you feel suction that says you got compression?
-Put spark wire back on spark plug >>> hold spark plug so threads touch bare metal part of spark plug hole >>> pull starter cord and see if spark shows between plug and saw >>> suggest you not hold metal part of spark plug while pulling cord [you'll understand why]
-If spark plug shows spark, then your saw has spark ... so put in new plug and start fresh.

If your saw has compression, spark, and fuel it should start unless carburetor is gummed up because gas was left in tank.
Here is the final trick. Start the saw while spraying WD-40 directly into carburetor and see if you can keep it going with the WD-40. This might take a helper. If this does not work, then carburetor is bad or gas line is clogged at carburetor. Time to take it to the shop.

Mini-mac 6 won't start

Engine needs spark and fuel to run. Does the spark plug fire when pulled through (remove the plug from the engine and clean around the plug base before taking the plug out)? Does it have fresh oil/fuel mixture? Try squirting a little fuel mix directly into the cylinder spark plug hole, and return the plug (if it was sparking). It should pop a couple of times--might even keep running! If it won't fire again (with the choke closed), then the carburetor probably needs attention. Has the saw been in storage for some time with old fuel left in the tank? If so, wash out the fuel tank with new fuel and pull the starter a number of times with new fuel in the tank. This engine runs fine with 40:1 or 50:1 (with right 2-stroke oil) fuel/oil mix.
