Toslink and 7.1 surround

I bought an onkyo HT-SR800, I did manage to find a few blu-ray movies and have them on my PS3. The HT-SR800 has "pass through", which won't pass through the video, so I have to use HDMI to the HDTV, and want to make sure I am still gettting 7.1 through the Toslink cable. How can I be sure it's really 7.1? Called onkyo, the guy there was not much help.

2 front, 2 rear, and 2 surround and a powered sub. It comes with an Audyssey mic to set up the speakers for any size room, not sure I am truly getting 7.1, since 5.1 will come out of all the speakers. I have read mmany different things on the net, so far it's about 50/50 on whether or not Toslink will carry 7.1 surround. But since I have pass though only, (HDMI) I am not sure if the Toslink cable is carrying 7.1 to the Onkyo HT-SR800 or not.

No, I have 7 speakers already, 2 front, 2 rear, 2 surround (2nd pair rear) and a powered sub. My question is, does Toslink carry the 7.1 signal? Since the HT-SR800 is only pass through, and the PS3 only has 1 HDMI out, I need to carry the HDMI signal to the TV, and a Toslink directly to the receiver for surround. How can I be sure I am really listening to 7.1 (I am using a blu-ray disc with 7.1 surround on it) without a HDMI cable? I have read over and over that I need a HDMI cable to carry the audio, and that a Toslink doesn't support 7.1, then I read that Toslink WILL carry the audio. I need clarification. Thank you for your response by the way.

Finally found someone who has the same setup (HDMI - TV, Toslink to receiver) I appreciate your comments, I will give it a try tonight.

For you to process 7.1 you need another pair of speakers. Your setup is 5.1 If you want to see some different 7.1 setups just google images of 7.1 speaker setups. Seeing it it easier than explaining it. Hope this helps

Everything I have seen say's the same Toslink does support 7.1. I have set it up with a Yamaha RXV2700 and it works fine using HDMI to the TV and Toslink to the receiver. My bad though, I missed the other pair you had...

Samsung Surround Sound & Palsonic TV = no surround sound on TV

Do you have an optical audio output jack on your tv? Some tv's don't output audio from that jack unless you go into the setup menu and turn in on.

Onkyo HT-SR800 won't turn on

If you call Onkyo directly, 201-785-2600, there is a procedure to "reset" the system, something like holding the power button on and holding down another button for a few seconds. Can't remember which, so I can't be sure, but try giving them a call.

Onkyo HT-SR800 the surround speakers are not blasting

I had the same problem and fixed it by manually setting the surround speakers changing the Level Cal to +12dB. You will immediately notice a significant increase in volume and may need to back down on the dB's. What a diffence it makes!

Only one surround back speaker works

It sounds to me like one of your speakers may be mis-wired. Try reversing the speaker wire (don't switch right-for left, but switch negative for positive) and see if that changes anything.

Surround sound

It must be about the sound quality need of your amplifier. The sound processor simply needs to get clear signals from sources such as fm/am receiver, dvd/cd players etc. in order to manage'em to give you the optimum surround sound. If the fm receiver has an "FM MUTE" option, I recommend that you turn it on. By doing so, you'll receive only good quality fm stations, furthermore your amplifier will let you get surround sound. The second issue you mentioned has its own answer inside. Use a "new" cd player, you can get optical cables, digital coax cables to improve the performance if you like..
