HI,
1) Power down and unplug the printer.
2) Go from the back of the printer on tray two. Use a small stiff rod about a 1/4" diameter and about 18" to 20" long.
3) Gently push the rod to the front of the tray being careful not to disturb any of the inner working parts.
4) Gently push the paper tray out until you feel the paper tray begin to unlatch, about 1/2" to an 1", you will feel it when it begins to unlatch.
5)Using the rod gently apply downward pressure on the front of the metal spring loaded paper sizing tray. Gently rock the paper tray back and forth applying downward pressure with the rod until the latch releases.
6) Never let your paper tray go empty :(
7) Buy a new paper tray from HP if it's still available. The tray may not show any signs of damage or wear but it is toast. You can try a refurbished part but my experience goes with new parts from HP.
Thanks,
HP Printer Support
The printer comes with one main tray which is referred to as tray 2. The bypass tray is labelled as tray 1.

SOURCE: settings in HP Printer LJ 4100.
The 4100 will look at tray 1 first then tray 2 If tray 1 is empty it will pull from tray 2 if the papersize matches the job otherwise back to tray 1 and ask for the paper.
Your machine likely thinks the paper in tray 2 is not the size you want. For instance you have LETTER in tray2 But the machine thinks it is legal.
The LJ 4100 detects the paper size in tray 2 automatically. If you print a configuration page:
MENU them INFORMATION then ITEM then CONFIGURATION PAGE then SELECT.
The page will print and show what size paper the machine thinks is in Tray 2 if it says LEGAL and you have LETTER you need to Check The Paper Backstop in TRAY 2.
The back stop sets the length of the paper if it is not at Letter (8 1/2 x 11) the machine will not detect LETTER. Even if it just a little bit off or between positions.
If it is set at LETTER then you may have bad switches in the machine that are operated by the tray.
Or the arms on the tray that operate the switches are not moving properly.
You will find the arms on the rt, side of the tray and feel them change position when you move the backstop.
Hope this helps.

The pickup rollers are worn out. Replace them and your problem will be gone. While you are sourcing them, use some alcohol. This may give them a little more life.
SOURCE: How do I change tray settings from tray 1 to tray 2?
Hi,
Browse through the menu's of the printer
Paper Handling Menu, Set
Tray 1: Any size / Any Type.
Tray 2: A4 Size / Plain Type.
This should solve the issue

Nikhil
SOURCE: Can not print to Tray 2 on HP 3800 printer. Says Tray is empty
check the paper type and the paper size from the printer menu, if it is ok then you will try to check the paper sensor on tray 2
Hi Check for
the correct installation of the paper tray. Most likely the pickup and feed
rollers are worn. These are held in by little embedded plastic clips. There are
rollers in the tray itself. To remove the rollers in the tray there's a little
plastic door on the tray. Lift it up, then depress the plastic clips on the
side of the roller and slide it off. The other rollers are inside the printer
just about the tray on the right. You need to
order roller kit online. Please get
back to us if you have further query else please accept the suggestion.
Thank you for contacting fixya.com
Go to the paper menu set tray 1, Letter size and "any" for paper type.
Set tray 2 Letter and paper type "Plain"
