My Miele 4060 is plumbed in but every few times I use it, it asks me to empty the water reservoir, which is about half full. Shouldn't it stay empty?
This looks like a fault. The plastic tank has two reed switches that measure 'tank empty' and 'tank half full'. When the tank is empty the inlet solenoids (there are 2 for safety) open and water enters the tank but not so much to fill the tank to the half way level. In normal operation the level water in the tank will drop and then more water is allowed in. In your case it appears the 'half full' reed switch is being activated because the solenoids are not closing off properly and water is leaking in and filling the tank. If you do not empty it then eventually it will fill and leak into the leak. The problem can be caused by either low water pressure (below 145 psi) or sticky solenoid. If is the solenoid then the Miele solution will be to replace both solenoids. Alternately you may be able to remove, take apart and clean. Also check that you have a mesh filter at connection to tap. Also you can temporarily fix the problem by turning off the water at the tap and re-programming machine to 'turn off' the plumed water line. regards
The fact that its worked well for 3 years suggests that water pressure is not the problem and its likely to be that the solenoids are not closing properly and thus allowing a small amount of water to leak in. The strainer helps prevent dirt getting into the solenoids which may be the original cause ... but that is not the actual problem now. The easiest way to test if the solenoids are leaking is as follows. 1. Turn off power at the small switch inside door and top left. 2. Remove water tank. 3. Look for the plumed water inlet hose that feeds water through hole in top of tank and monitor this. If the solenoids are leaking then there will be a small drip from this pipe into the machine. Please test for this and advise.
Will do - though I'm on the road so it will be a few days before I can get back to you. Thanks again for your help!

The water contain is filled by the units water intake - it is where the water is stored to make coffee - as the water is used the solenoid opens and refills as required.

Hmmm. Thanks very much for the thoughtful answer. I'm wondering if something is different here - you refer to the mesh filter at the connection to the tap. My machine is hard plumbed into the water supply - no taps involved. And though I didn't say this before, for the first 2-3 years this issue never came up - it ran and made coffee as expected with no intervention from me. In fact, I didn't even know it had a water tank until I first got the error message and found it and emptied it... Don't know what our water pressure is, but I do know we have normal city water pressure - never heard anyone comment about lower than normal pressure. Do these comments change anything in your answer? Cheers,
