SOURCE: outboard motor overheating

Mate. The powerhead(engine block) is clogged.Don,t run it anymore untill its cleaned out or the motor will cook.Take the heads off 1st and see whats in the water jackets. It will probably be blocked.A build up of white 'gunk' is the main indicator. If thats the case,a complete cleanout is needed.Hope this helps

SOURCE: replace water pump impellor 15hp yamaha outboard

Put the motor in neutral. On the leg of the motor there is a little side cover plate.Remove.Undo the bolts. This is the gear change linkage. At the cavitation plate, there is 4 bolts.Remove.If the lower housing does not drop, give it a soft whack with a soft hammer. When dropped, you will see the prop shaft and the gear linkage.Lower it all the way out.Its easy to work on if you put the lower skeg in a vice.Take the water pump apart BUT!!! have a look at which way the impellar blades are pointed.Grease the new impellar as you put it back in and turn it at the same time to get the nodes in properly.Heaps of grease to protect all the bolts.Makes it easier next time.Hope this helps

SOURCE: how tough is it to change water pump impeller on 15hp johnson

There is no special tricks.Unbolt the gearshift linkage that has access through the side of the leg.Usually a small plate.Unbolt the lower g/box.4 bolts I think. The box should then drop.If not,use a rubber hammer and be patient.Put the lower skeg of the g/box in a vice to make things easier.NOW.When you lift the housing of the w/pump take a note of which way the impellar pump lobes are curled.DON'T put the new impellar in the wrong way. It's probably worth putting in a new seal whilst it's apart. You spin the housing or imp. as you put it together.Use a small bit of grease for the initiall dry start-up.Put some very good grease on the top splines on the driveshaft. It goes straight into the crankshaft. If it corrodes, nothing comes apart. As you put the g/box back on,spin the prop so the splines go back in.There is no special alignment.Gearchange linkage and you go fishing.(take the prop off and regrease the splines on the shaft of it)Hope this helps

1993 Mercury Outboard Engine. Why is it not peeing?

Question edited for clarity, but needs engine model and HP.
Question moved from Dishwashers.

Some ideas here. Check that the impeller spins (the drive is okay), but it sounds like you have blocked passageways.

What year is a mercury 35hp outboard motor with serial number2491265.Is the motor 2 or 4 stroke

the serial number begins 2487558 and continues past 2491265 and as the beginning serial number denotes the year , your engine is 1969 model
it shows as a 2 stroke with auto oil injection
check the heads
if the plugs are in the flat of the head and there are no rocker covers it is 2 stroke

Have you replaced the impeller in the lower unit recently? If so was it in pieces? I would start there.

1977 9.8 hp Mercury Outboard Motor Serrial # 4605112, it's an electric start with a short shaft

put it in forward gear. Drop the lower off by releasing the bolts and nuts holding it holding the lower on. (one is hiding under the back pick up screen)- some models had a plug in the back top of the exhaust/intermediate housing hiding an allen head bolt pointing down.

Once released, put a protector in a vise and clamp the lower to the bench.

2 screws or bolts will hold the water pump cover on. (the drive shaft runs thru it) Clean the carbon and rust off the drive shaft will allow the pump housing and impeller off the lower. Retrieve the funny looking key drive which runs the pump.

Inspect the shaft, the lower unit oil for water. and find all the pieces of the water pump impeller which may have gone places they shouldn't have.- including the outlet tube from the power head. Check this by putting a tube on the end and blowing- you should hear and feel the pressure in the exhaust and tell tale hole.

Now take the model number , the old pump parts to the marina for a replacement. Do a side by side comparison at the marina so you get the right stuff. Check the inside drive of the rubber impeller and see if they are exactly the same.

NOW- put the new wear plate / gaskets and drive key on, hold in place with grease. Slide the impeller on the key and spin the drive in both directions to be sure it has the impeller and will securely turn it.

Put grease in the cup of the pump housing to prevent dry start and help seat the impeller blades. Spin the shaft as you lower the housing in the pump so the blades all face in the right direction (clockwise). Screw in the bolts. Grease up the seal the watertube goes in and the spline end of the drive shaft.

Up the hole it all goes, now you only have to spline the shifter (it hasn't moved has it?) The drive shaft and the water tube all at the same time.

Check the shifter for correct position and bolt it down

Water pump not working on Johnson 3.3 outboard 2 stroke.

sounds like you need a new water pump impeller.
to access the impeller the bottom of the motor needs to be unbolted and the impeller is fitted to the shaft, it is keyed so it only goes on one way. ( impeller kits will come with new gaskets,grease.O-rings and a new key ). re-bolt the lower unit and test.

Mercury 20Hp impeller/water pump location

It is located inside the lower unit housing. They are fairly easy to replace. Most Mercury authorized service stations will charge around $120 for this task.
