sounds like the inner cable is broken,either at the speaker end or the jack plug. but if there new take them back to the shop they should be under guarentee
could also be a damaged wire, check that first by "feeling up" the wires, does it feel cut or interrupted somewhere? if not, you can open the speakers by lifting or prying out the rubber cushions on the bottom side and removing the screws. Remember this voids your warranty, if it's still applicable.
Usually if there is only one cord coming from the speakers it is green and that fits into the green port on the motherboard, the reast are there for Mic and 5:1 sound
