It is quite likely the drive is failed. If it is quite new it should still be within warranty. Return it to your place of purchase and get them to confirm it's condition. If the drive prooves faulty they should repair/replace it for you.
Most, if not all external hard drived do not need a driver. Connect the drive and power, turn it on. There is no need to use the backup program that comes with the drive. Use Windows backup that comes with Windows 7.
Vista, suggest that you upgrade to Windows 7, or downgrade to XP. Both operating systems are more reliable than Vista AND you won't get this kind of issue. Seriously, Google fight Vista Problems vs XP or Windows 7 problems.
go to device manager on computer, (while the external hardrive is connected) find the drive on the list and right click it or somthing, and look to see if you can update any drivers on it..this is more then likely your problom because when you switched from xp to 7 it might have wiped out the drivers for the external hardrive
Attach your external HD with some other computer, that will definitely appear normal, the problem is due to a virus in ur HD. Your computer's antivirus software stops it to appear. Back up your data on the other computer, format ur external HD, remove un-necessary files and run a virus scan to the files u copied from HD, Hope this will solve the problem, if not, let me know and tell me what would be the response on the other compuer
You can try opening the device manager in Window XP and uninstall the external hard disk (make sure you show unplugged devices). Then replug the drive again, and it should reinstall the drivers.
OK, I bought this Western Digital MyBook 500 GB Essential Edition too, and could not get it to work with Windows 98 SE.
I followed the above instructions, but my version of windows was missing even the drivers suggested above! UGH!
HOWEVER, I found ANOTHER SOLUTION. I installed USB 2.0 drivers for mass storage and the the MY BOOK icon popped up on my Windows 98 SE machine. Hurray! Hurray! Hurray!
