Riding lawn mower won't start

Five year old John Deere riding mower. Was running, but the the choke needed to be partially engaged. Then it quit running altogether. Replaced fuel filter and fuel pump. Will start and run if starting fluid is squirted into carburator, but will not run on it's own.

The carburetor is clogged from old fuel. remove and clean and consider getting a carb kit to give it new seals and gaskets and needle/seat. Sta-bil in the fuel, particularly over winter will prevent this problem. When the work is done, be sure to drain the old fuel and use fresh.

GOOD MORNING, I HAVE A D140 JOHN DEERE LAWN MOW,IT RUN WELL WHEN NOT MOWING BUT WHEN ENGAGED IT SLOW DOWN AS THOUGH IT HAS TO CATCH IT'S BREATH LESS THAN THREE YEARS OLD

Make sure there isn't anything binding the deck belt or blades. Check the spindles for free movenent. If all that is good then it might be the linkage that is supposed to adjust the throttle when the engine is under load or it might be a carb issue...especially if you run ethanol gas in it.

2007 riding mower John Deere backfires while trying to start will not start

Inspect/replace the air filter to ensure proper air flow.
Inspect/replace the sparkplug(s) to ensure proper firing.
Check the position of the "choke" (if equipped; & by the way, most riding lawn mowers do not use a primer bulb button to prime the engine before starting).
