Unless your manually operated sewing machine has switches to realign your sewing machine needle to make zig zag stitching, as is demonstrated in this YouTube video (starting at around 6:30 minutes in the video):

you cannot. Note: The machine in the video is a Necchi brand sewing machine.

Without knowing the model number of your manually operated Singer sewing machine, I cannot try to find operating instructions for it to determine if your machine has zig zag stitching potential.

Go to customer service--click on it--it will show a small menu--click on instruction manual
In the box put the model number (example 177 )DO NOT ADD THE C IN THE BOX WITH THE NUMBERS & click search
in nothing comes up from the search then contact singer customer service about a manual

I am not too sure of what you mean by the ankle, do you mean the part that holds the foot on? That is called a presser foot holder, that only screws on. You can call Brother at 1-877-276-8437 and order from them or go to www.sewingpartsonline.com and order that part plus 10 attachments for $24.50 that is a pretty good deal actually, because yours didn't come with many extra feet. If, you decide to do that search for "presser foot holder" and the click Brother, but you have a low shank and Singer will also work. Good luck
