My beater bar does not turn, belt is on, it has vacuum,

Hello, Rudy -

Without knowing the make and model of your vacuum cleaner it is a challenge to answer your question.

Some vacuum cleaners have an on/off switch to turn the beater bar/brush on and off, so that when using the machine on hardwood, a moving beater bar/brush will not damage the wood.

You may find these troubleshooting steps helpful:
(Quote)
If something gets caught in the brush roll, the overload protector shuts off the roller. Lie the vacuum down and turn it over to access the brush roller after turning it off and unplugging it from the wall. Check the roller for threads, hair or other debris wrapped around the roller. A pair of scissors can cut through long threads and help you to remove them from the roller. Double-check the belt on the roller to verify it sits in the groove made for it. The brush roller won't function properly when the belt is misaligned.

Personal opinion: Find a local vacuum repair business, take your vacuum cleaner there, and have a trained technician inspect your vacuum cleaner and recommend the proper repair and quote you a price.

Best wishes.

Trying to change the belt

things you will need Vacuum belt
  • Screwdriver
  1. Locate and purchase the correct belt for your Eureka vacuum cleaner from the local grocery or department store. Vacuum belts come in different sizes according to your model of vacuum. Check your owner's manual or the vacuum itself for your model number.

  2. Turn your vacuum cleaner over so that the bottom of the unit is facing you. Remove the cover plate from the bottom by undoing the screws that are holding it in place with a screwdriver.

  3. Locate the belt pulley rod near the back of the vacuum base coming out of the motor. With the vacuum cleaner base turned upside down and facing you, the motor and pulley rod should be up near the top of the base.

  4. Slide the vacuum brush roller out of the slots at the bottom of the vacuum base and remove the old belt from the brush roller and pulley rod. With the brush roller off of the unit, clean the brush by removing any strings or cords wrapped around the tube.

  5. Install the new belt by looping it over the belt pulley rod next to the motor and then looping around the end of the brush roller in the belt slot. Hold the brush roller and pull back on it to tighten the belt while you slide the roller back into the slots on the vacuum base.

  6. Replace the base cover plate by snapping it back into place and securing it with screws. Turn vacuum back upright and turn it on to test the belt and verify the unit is working

Beater bar belt install

  • 1

Unplug the vacuum cleaner and turn it upside down, flat on the floor, with the roller brush facing up.

  • 2

Remove the the bottom cover plate from the vacuum by prying it off gently with a screwdriver blade. Set aside the cover plate.

  • 3

If the old belt is broke, remove it by pulling the belt from underneath the roller bush. If the belt is not broken but simply worn out, and is still attached, cut it off with scissors.

  • 4

Remove the roller brush by lifting both ends from the grooved slots in the housing of the vacuum cleaner.

  • 5

Cut away hair, thread, string and other debris wound around the roller, using the scissors. Tangles on the roller brush are a common reason for belt wear and breakdowns due to the added weight and stress on the roller brush.

  • 6

Slip the replacement belt over the roller brush and seat the belt in the groove in the center of the roller.

  • 7

Slide the roller brush back into the grooved mounts on either side of the housing and snap into place.

  • 8

Pull back on the new belt and slip the loop over the pulley attached to the vacuum motor.

  • 9

Replace the bottom cover by snapping it back on the housing until it clicks into place.

Self propel not working, burning smell

Flip the vacuum cleaner over and check the roller brush. Is it full of string and hair? If so, unscrew the four phillips-head screws holding the plate on that covers the roller brush; pull out the brush, and cut off/clean off all the hair and string. Replace everything and try running the vacuum. Alternate solution: perhaps the belt that makes the brush go around is broken. If so, follow the above steps to remove the roller brush, then replace the belt.
