I would suggest that you go to Yahoo Groups, then ask to join the group called Elna Heirlooms. They are a great group of Swiss Elna users who share their knowledge and love of these machines. You should be able to find a diagram from them

My Elna repair man is also the individual I purchased my Elna from in December 1980. His name is Boyd Albright, located in Ottawa, Kansas. I have never had the issues you describe, but Boyd has always serviced my machine and as far as I'm concerend, is the best. Switch power off first. On the top left hand side of the machine towards the front is a small hole. Insert small screwdriver in hole and push down. The light bulb will appear underneath just to the left of the presser foot. Whilst holding down the screwdriver firmly, turn bulb anti-clockwise pushing slightly upwards at the same time. Bulb should dislodge.
