I Attempted to Format my PS3 and I ended up cancelling it because of how long it said it would take. The system now insists that the system storage be formatted. I do want to format it, but my controllers have stopped working. I push the PS button, the red lights blink and then, nothing. Is there a way around this?

SOURCE: After formating PS3

You need to plug your sixaxis controller to the ps3 with the usb cord to marry the control to your system. after unplugging and pressing the home button it should link up. If not try using another usb cord or plug on the ps3.

Hope this helps.

SOURCE: new hard drive on ps3

You're almost there Robert.

What the PS3 is asking for is this:

PS3 Firmware 2.60

You've got to download it and then place it into two folders like this on an external hard drive or thumbdrive or cd if that's all you got.

PS3--UPDATE

If you look at the instructions you'll see what I'm talking about. Make sure the folder names are all capitalised or else it won't work.

Once you have this in place press START and SELECT on the controllers and it will allow you to format the hard drive.

Let me know if you get stuck or have any more questions.

Best of luck!

SOURCE: ps3 stopped suddenly working and

Hi Andrea.
What your experiencing is the the well known "PS3 Red/Green Light of death" which generally means a hardware failure or overheating. If it's overheating (2 Red lights) then it will automatically shut down after a while but from what your saying it's not overheating.

If you have it in warranty you have to send it to Microsoft and they will send it back usually 3-4 weeks or take it to a reputable gaming console repair shop (this will cost money).

But first check that your AV cable is properly plugged in (in this case all four RED lights are bleeping). If you're using an HDMI connection forget about this step.

So if you don't have a warranty then it will cost you about $150.
Another thing you can do is follow a guide and repair all of the errors with the PS3 including your problem. Click here for more information.

I try to download stuff off the internet but it keeps saying connect storage media at the save destination what does this mean

File formats that the PS3 doesn't recognize as something that it can play can only be saved to a USB storage device, or a memory card. You can't download anything to the PS3 hard drive via the browser that you couldn't copy to it from a USB storage device. That is what the error message means. You have to connect an external storage device, because the PS3 won't store this file format on the internal drive. This protects the integrity of the system. If you connect a USB drive or memory card (you will need a USB adapter for the memory card if you don't have a launch PS3), then you can download anything that you want using the PS3 web browser.

How to connect storage media to ps3

If you mean a external HDD then you need to be able to format the External HDD so its a FAT32 and not NTFS file system. The PS3 wont recognize any other file system. You can do this with swissknife.

How do i connect storage media on my ps3 im trying to download real player downloder

gtancie

In regards to connecting external drives to your PS3 they drive has have a FAT format on it for the file system. However most large hard drives do not use this format but USB thumb drives do. This is what I normally use to watch movies to my PS3.

Note the only time I have had to format a large hard drive to FAT is to do a back up of my PS3. If you still would like to format a large drive let me know and I will work up a walk through for you. Note Windows XP and new version of Windows do not have the option to format to a true FAT format. Windows XP does use what is call xFAT but your PS3 will not see the drive.

Its telling me the hard disc is corrupt and is reloading it but it doesn't fix it and takes ages but is the same

Your hard drive has a problem and needs to be formatted. this has happened to me twice already but not with the original hard drive that came with the ps3, I changed mine to a 500 gig drive which had the problems.

the bad news is that you have lost everything that you saved onto the drive and need to reformat and reinstall the ps3 operating system.

If you go through the system settings there is an option to format the drive. Do that.
Then you need to get a USB flash drive, and follow the steps below

Download the update and save the file to a compatible storage device such as Memory Stick, Memory Stick Duo, a USB or PSP.

Before starting, use your PC to create a folder named "PS3" in the storage media or USB. In this folder, create a folder named "UPDATE" (the folder name is case sensitive and must appear in capital letters). Once the UPDATE folder is created, download and store the update for PS3 system software.

Once the update saved, remove the storage media and connect to your PS3 via the slots under the slot cover, or USB, depending on the storage medium used.

Once the storage media connected, go to Settings on the home menu of the PS3, select System Update, then update via Storage Media. Select the storage media connected to the PS3 installs the update data stored there.

Good luck.

It say that my hard disk file system is corrupted.what should i do about that but another one.

Cause #1: PS3 powered off during 'write to disk' stage of game startup, which is easy to do if the factory default "Auto Start Game" setting is still on in System Settings (turn this setting off).
Solution: Sony uses Seagate notebook drives for PS3's. You will need to remove the drive and connect it to your PC (go to the link on Cause #2's solution for instructions). Because the PS3 drive format is not recognized by Windows it might not show up as an accessible drive. You will then need to go to: Control Panel/Administrative Tools/Computer Management/Storage/Disk Management and assign the PS3 HDD a drive letter - but skip or cancel when asked to format or partition this drive. Now go to: http://www.seagate.com/www/en-us/support/downloads/seatools/
and download SeaTools. This program will diagnose and repair the problem on the PS3 HDD (without erasing game saves, downloads, etc.). Next, just re-install the drive into the PS3, and remember to turn off the "Auto Start Game" option!

Cause #2: Physical HDD failure.
Solution: Contact store/Sony if still under warranty. If not, just replace your PS3 HDD with a 2.5" SATA notebook drive. Easy to follow guide at:

That's the best way to do over your PC to your USB. Create a folder on the storage media in which to save the update data.
Using a PC, create a folder named “PS3” on the storage media or USB device. Within the PS3 folder, create a folder named “UPDATE”.
  • Download the update data and save it in the UPDATE folder created in step 1. Select here to start the download.
Notice
Be sure to save the update data as noted below. If the data is not saved in the correct way, the PS3™ system will not recognize the update data.
  • Location: Save in the “PS3” folder > “UPDATE” folder
  • File name: Save as file name “PS3UPDAT.PUP”.
    Update procedure
Notices
  • Do not turn off the PS3™ system or remove the storage media or USB device during an update. If an update is cancelled before completion, the system software may become damaged, and the system may require servicing or exchange.
  • The power button on the PS3™ system front is not active during an update.
  1. Insert the storage media or USB device that contains the update data in the PS3™ system.
  2. From the home menu, select (Settings) > (System Update), and then press the button
The folder name must be in all uppercase letters.
  • Location: Save in the “PS3” folder > “UPDATE” folder
  • File name: Save as file name “PS3UPDAT.PUP”.

  3. Select [Update via Storage Media], and then press the button.

The system automatically searches for and finds the update data saved on the storage media or USB device.

  4. Start the update data.
    network_update.jpg

Press the button to start the update data. Follow the on-screen instructions to complete the update.

  5. Confirm that the update was successful.
After the update has been completed, go to (Settings) > (System Settings) > [System Information]. If the System Software field displays the version number of the update, the update was successful.
Hint
You can delete the update data from the storage media or USB device after the update has been successfully completed.
