Ditch Vista.
Google your machine's model number and the terms "replace vista with XP." If you're fortunate, your mfg may have also sold your model with XP and they may have a whole list of the XP drivers on their website. (Some Dell machines are good for this.)
Before starting the reformat, research each problem that you find other (smart) people had. For example: (1) Locating drivers (some mfg make this difficult and lyingly say it's not possible when it might be), (2) changing bios settings so the hard drive is usable for XP IF necessary.
When you think you have a complete set of answers for the problems you might face, then begin the erase. You must use an XP that you have a legal right to run (simple option is to use and XP CD purchased straight from MS if not running on other machine).
Run XP until Windows 7 grows up some more (6 months -- 2 years?). Let the other people be the guniea pigs!
