Disconnect your shift and throttle cables, they may be reversed. See if the engine will shift now by hand. If it does not, then the problem was created when the shop benched the gear box and reinstalled it. Take it back even if it was last season. This kind of problem usually does not happen by itself.

the gear shift shaft/rod pushes down on a metal wedge inside the gear box this forces a dog clutch to engage a gear and transfer the engine drive to the prop shaft along the prop. A return spring keeps the dog clutch against the wedge so that when the shift shaft/rod is lifted the dog clutch disengages (neutral) if you keep lifting another gear is engaged, astern. Missing one of the gears, adjustment. No gears, shaft/rod alignment. Is yours direct mechanically hard linked or does a cable transfer the movement to the shaft? Check the top shift connections first, before taking the leg apart again.
Hope the above, windy reply is useful.

Buying a Mercury 250Efi motor but it is a 30" shaft. Is there any way to change it to a 20" or 25" shaft?

yes there is but sad to inform you it will cost you a bunch as you have to buy drive shaft and lower housing then add in the time to exchange the gears seals prop water pump etc .shift linkage also needs to be purchased .even used the parts might run 1000.

Water in Lower Unit. Noticed when changing lower unit lube. 25 HP 4 stroke 5 years old.

one of the seals has gotten damaged fishline is the usual varmit around the prop shaft.check there first ,easiest to fix also or it might be drive shaft seal or shift rod seal .if you can put air pressure in the upper oil plug hole you might find where it is but do not use more than 15 or 20 lbs possible to blow all seals with too much.

Mercury outboard 70 hp 1987 when in forward gear the prop turns one way when in neutrel spins both ways when in reverse the prop is locked both ways is my lower unit working property

mercury and others have a "sawtooth" cut for forward gear so the prop will rachet spin backward when dry tested, and a square clutch dog for reverse, which when it finally engages locks the prop in reverse. and will not spin in either direction.

So when you shift--- snap in in gear-- do not ease it in gear, as it will wear the dog out faster.

When i put my mercury 150 into gear it hits really

See if you can turn down the base idle some. Then check your gear lube, sometimes you can get an airpocket and the top end is dry. Last, if still not fixed, see if you can adjust the cables so that the throttle RPM changes after the gears do.

You want a little lag in the throttle so you don't take out a dock when coming onshore.

All the gear lube on my bravo III leaked out. The oil came out where the prop and the lower unit meet.

we had replaced the engine in our 87 4.3 star craft and when we put the omc cobra stern drive back in we now dont have foward gear, we have nuetral and reverse. could it be the linkage or could it be the shifter cable or any other idea's that could be the problem.

Gear Lube leaking from Prop

Keep an eye on it and put a bucket with paper inside under the motor. You want to know whether the oil is burnt oil from the exhaust or gear lube. You should be able to tell from the color of the oil. Its kind of like soot in a chimney, the exhaust goes through the prop with the oil you added to the gas.
