Anonymous, It is the remote hand set which goes bad. Please have the hand set checked for defective crystal oscillator, old batteries, and failed IR LED. There may be some internal damage due to falling also.

If remote control is working properly, the infrared sensor inside the TV is faulty. If so, contact any service technician to replace it.
Look for anything blocking in the sensor panel of the TV, like glue, gum or any other sticky substance, which might obscure communication. If these are ok, the sensor part has to be looked into.

I had the same problem. My vizio remote for my 42 inch 2 month old vizio also seemed to stop working. Here's what I did: My vizio remote (like most remote's nowadays) was designed for multiple components (tv, dvd, vcr, etc). All you need to do to make the remote work again is set it back to tv. Now, the confusing thing about vizio remotes is that they actually have TWO places where you can switch the remote to the appliance you want to control. One is on top of the remote, the other is on the BOTTOM. Switch it back to TV using the BOTTOM. My remote had stopped working because I had inadvently switched it to another component on the BOTTOM component switch.
Both remotes are operating on the same frequency - usually you would think that having two products of same manufacturer would be a good idea, but in this case, the remotes interfere with each other.
Your set uses the 195 series chasis. The only thing I can think of which would make the channels scroll by themselves is a contaminated PC board and pushbuttons behind the buttons on the front of the set. This is usually the case when spray cleaner or some other fluid is sprayed or spilled on the screen, and it drips down onto that board. To prove this, remove the back cover and on the top of the main chassis, where the top of the picture tubes are, is a small PC board with the remote reciever and a couple of jacks. The smaller jack is for the speakers and the larger jack is for the front panel PC board. Unplug the larger connector which goes up to the front PC board and then turn the set on with the remote. If the set works normally, the front PC board will have to be removed and cleaned or repaired (or just leave the jack unplugged and work the TV from the remote only). If you do not have any experience working inside projection sets then allow a qualified tech to handle it for you.
