Beep Codes
Your computer might emit a series of beeps
during start-up if the monitor cannot display
errors or problems. The following repetitive
beep codes help you troubleshoot problems
with your computer.
NOTE: To replace parts, see the Service
Manual on the Dell Support website at
support.dell.com.
One beep - BIOS ROM checksum failure;
possible motherboard failure
Contact Dell (see "Contacting Dell" on page 53).
Two beeps - No RAM detected

Remove the memory modules, reinstall
one module and restart the computer. If
the computer starts normally, reinstall anadditional module. Continue until you have
identified a faulty module or reinstalled all
modules without an error.

If available, install memory modules of the
same type in your computer.

Three beeps - Possible motherboard failure
Contact Dell (see "Contacting Dell' on page 53).
Four beeps - RAM read/write failure

Ensure that no special memory module/
memory connector placement requirements
exist (see the Service Manual on the Dell
Support website at support.dell.com).

Verify that the memory modules that you are
installing are compatible with your computer.

Five beeps - Real Time Clock failure
Replace the battery.
Six beeps - Video BIOS test failure

I get 5 short beeps when I turn the computer on. what does that mean?

Marty,
The 5 beep code on the XPS 9100 refers to a CMOS Battery Failure. You can click the link below to download the online manual. The manual provides information on removing/replacing parts within your computer.

4 beeps on dell xps 13

4 beeps on startup is a RAM error. Locate the ram stick(s), remove and re-seat them. Make sure you do this with the machine powered off and the battery removed!!!

My Dell Poweredge 1550 won't connect to the screen. It also constantly beeps upon startup

Is it in a 1, 3, 2 beep pattern (beep....beep, beep, beep........beep, beep)? If so, the memory is either not seated well or may be bad. Try reseating your memory. If it continues, try with one stick at a time just to see if it will boot up with a display.

Thanks,
--Brian
