Need to install the hard drive from the Seagate Central into a computer to recover data.

Easier way if computer has USB ports, just use a USB convertor for IDE and Sata, (search for usb hard drive convertor) ( $10 or So) and you will be able to copy your files to the computer and to save to another hard drive or CD or DVD.

I have a Seagate 3.5 inch pushbutton backup external hard drive, M# ST3400601CB-RK that states that it needs to be formatted. I would like to remove the hard drive and put it as a slave on another PC. ...

Attaching it to another PC will just move the problem to the other PC. USB drives frequently have the problem you are seeing.

You can have your partition and data restored remotely by this guy. http://FreeDataRecovery.us

My seagate external hard drive cable cannot be connected to the external hard drive. the mechanism to hold the cable has loosen and is now inside the hard drive. What can I do?

You can unplug all wires from it.
Remove the screws which hold the chassis (cover) and remove the cover to access the hard drive inside.
Once the cover is off, you can see the connector inside and repair it back the way it was.
Replace the cover and screws and you are done.

Hi ,
Here are several back up sofwares wich could help . I still think Acronis is the best .
If you are under Windows 7 , you don't need third party programs anymore . Just go to Start , type " back up entire system " and follow instructions .

Power supply for Seagate 400GB

Ebay or seagate.com may be a solution.
I've used those Seagate portables and 2 have caused problems.
Or disassemble the unit, remove the drive and buy a portable case or USB adapter.

External case removal, Seagate ST3160026A-RK External drive

You remove the foot/stand unit, then the silver cover with the circular rubber ring can be carefully pried off. If you do this, you'll void the warranty, so if you want to do this because your unit is dead, then you should return it for a warranty repair. If you're doing this to put a larger capacity drive in the box, be aware that larger or faster hard drives might generate more heat which could adversely affect the new drive's ability to operate properly.
