Panasonic legacy connection

I am trying to hook up a Panasonic HT50PX77U Tv to an older Harmon Kardon AV135 receiver. When I use high def component cables thru the receiver the on screen display won't be displayed to adjust speaker settings. This function only works on standard definition ( S video ). Harmon Kardin suggests using a legacy connection at the back of the TV.
Guys, What is a legacy connection, does this TV have one and how do I set it up?
Alternately, could I run an a DVI by HDMI adapter straight from my cable box to the TV, an Optical cable straight from my cable box to the receiver for sound, and two S video cables one from the cable box to receiver and one from the receiver to TV? Wouldn't I have to change inputs on my TV every time I wanted to adjust sound, then back to high def for TV veiwing?... if I used this kind of hook up.
Damn, my head is starting to hurt.

S-video is a legacy connection. legacy means obsolete and this will impare your image.

what you should do is connect the cable box and blue ray directly to tv with hdmi cable, then run audio cables back to the reciever from these devices. the vcr and regular dvd player would be routed through the reciever the conventional way. you would have to change the inputs on the tv between the cable box, and blue ray if u have one, and a seperate single tv imput for components running thru the stereo. you would have to use the reciever to select between audio sources, and the video sources between the vcr and dvd only.

Trying to connect samsung smart tv to harmon kardon avr 330 with toslink cable, but i'm not gettting any sound through the receiver to speakers

The inputs may be assignable on the Harman Kardon. Make sure you have selected the proper analog or digital input type for the cable you are using. Hook sound surrond

You probably have to select the optical input from the menu for sources of your component connection. Most receivers allow you to select optical, coax, or plain PCM right/left audio.

Is the harmon kardon avr 225 receiver hi def? we had a "non" hi def tv hooked to our receiver and we are replacing the tv with a hi def LED. do we need a new receiver?

It does not have any of the usual HDMI or component video jacks on the back. The highest 'def' video it supports is S-Video (standard def).

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/S-Video

It is NOT necessary to route video through an audio device. Your TV is the ultimate and most logical first recipient of any high def video content.

Whatever video you elect to pass through this thing is not modified in a good way if at all. You COULD just run the HiDef video straight to the TV and not have to worry about what could be happening in the excessive and unnecessary cabling that takes it for a trip through the receiver.

The receiver can still be managed by running its composite (standard def) video from the Monitor Out to a composite input of your new TV.

Likewise, no digital audio would improve from passing it through any device that just acts as a stepping stone to the receiver and ultimately your ears. That iswhy all decent A/V gear has provisions to run the signals separately to their optimum electronic end-user.

Just bought a Sharp LED TV and there is a slight delay between hearing sound and seeing lips move. Have cable box hooked up to tv by HDMI and have cable box hooked to AVR (Harmon Kardon AVR125) by optical...

Hi if there is an optical out on the television i would use that direct to your Harmon Kardon AVR 125, the sound would be in sync with picture, as the source is the same.

Harmon Kardon unlock error

I have the same problem. All of a sudden no sound through my TV connection (but through the DVD connection the sound was still working). I changed the connection from video 1 to video 2 and got the sound back. It is not a real solution, but a practical one :-)
