My wife replaced three ink cartridges in our HP Photosmart C8180. After she closed the cover, she got an error message - Oxc18a0101. We bought the printer new about 14 months ago. We haven't had any other problems in the past and we haven't moved the printer since we first started using it. It has been kept between 65 and 75 degrees F at all time.
I had exactly this error message. Rang HP. They said it was a hardware failure, they couldn't fix over phone, would cost 2x cost of new printer to fix, but they offered me 20% discount on new printer if ordered over the phone.
But with some fiddling, problem now resolved. Here's what I did:
- press Red Eye Removal and Print Photos button together
- goes to Mfg Commands -> Enter Special Keys Combo. Press OK
- uaiux Support page (some code) -> click right arrow key until you get to System Configuration Menu - click oK
- should say hardware failure status - click OK
- says hardware failure status: Clear. Press OK to clear
- I clicked OK on this and system reset itself and problem was solved
Thank you.... thank you.... thank you! I just came across this solution whist scouring the internet in desperation looking for a way to fix this problem at 5:30am with no HP support line available at this time in the morning! This solution WORKED! You have saved and made my day! PS I still HATE my HP C8180 printer - wish I had never bought it!
Great Giving such a great solution at apprentice rank is unbelievable.

Excellent it worked!! Thank you!
Really, thank you, I had the same problem and I resolved it with your help. I'm writting from France and I wanted to thanks you very much...
thanks so much! this worked perfectly and save me the time and aggravation of having to get the runaround from HP. again, many thanks.
Thank you very much. Sooo.... simple and efficient. I was ready to take my printer to the repair shop. You save me a lot.
I am very happy because I never had a problem with this printer until now.
Thanks, this solved my problem...f or now. I was ready to scrap this thing. Why doesn't HP have this solution on their site?
HP Support Desk were useless!
PC WORLD Phone a Friend was useless!
I was 5 minutes from throwing the printer away and replacing with a new printer
when I decided to look on google to see if anyone else had experienced the problem
and to see if it was recoverable! THE ADVICE ABOVE WORKED 100% !!!!
MANY MANY THANKS!!!
I was ready to throw C8180 in garbage. It works now.
Thank you majcro!!! You amazing! This solution worked perfectly on my C8180. The HP reset solution was totally bogus. They should post this on their site...but that would mean losing money on a bogus repair. Thanks again.
Thank you So so much for this information!!! It was very helpful and much appreciated!
After I replaced all the cartridges, I got this error. I tried everything until I found your fix. Thank you for this relatively simple solution. It worked great. Only, after the last step, we shut down the printer and restarted it. It worked like a charm.
it worked right away. Very simple. Thank you very much!!!
I thought this was going to work, but it came up with a paper jam error. I cannot see any paper stuck...I have even used canned air. Is there a way to open up the printer and check deeper inside for a paper jam?
Thank you very much!!! it solved the problem for me :-)
Worked for me. Thank you, majcro!
Thank you this solved the issue, rather than the HP advice to just purchase another printer..
Thanks! Really worked!

We also had this error on our C8180 printer, and tried the HP Ox,,,Error reset 'solution' that didn't work. Resetting the failure code worked perfectly. Thanks so much for posting this! :)
First thing I would do is this procedure from HP:
Ox... Error reset
Thanks for using Fixya.
It worked initially ! For a day or two, then the error kept coming back more
Geez, what is it about 5:30am? It's that time now, and I just found this fix after several hours of pressing all sorts of button combinations while standing on my head, drinking water from the other side of the glass, and humming some lame song. At the moment it seems to be reconfiguring and I'm keeping my fingers crossed - THANK YOU!!
