In trying to adjust the tension on my singer 8734 to not have any thread bunching up under the fabric , I now haven't got any tension. I'm not sure how to clean the tension knob. Can anyone help me?

Needle in correct? Be sure your bobbin is not in upside down and turning the wrong way. Possibly the hook that the bobbicase fits in/on has been hit by a needle and caused a burr that is catching the thread as it comes around. The burr would have to be polished off or hook replaced. The machine could be slightly out of time also.

I know you hate to hear this but you are probably threading it incorrectly. Make sure that the presser foot is in the up position when you thread the machine. This ensures that the tension discs are open and the thread makes it in between the disc.

Try a different bobbin. Look for one that is a little narrower. I had the same problem and changing to a narrower bobbin fixed it.

If you getting loops on the bottom of your material, you need to
re-thread the top of your machine. I say this because it is very rare
when you will have to adjust the bobbin tension. But if you must,
looking straight down at the bobbin as a clock- at 6:00 is the bobbin
tension adjustment- lefty lucy, righty tighty. Hope this helps.
Make sure the needle is inserted in the machine properly- a good rule
of thumb is the flat side of the needle should go to the opposite side
of the last thread guide. Also make sure the machine is threaded
correct
There is no standard tension for any machine to be set at. They start
at four when they are brand new, however, after years and years the
springs become compressed. You could start at four and then play around
with it from there. If you are getting loops underneath the material,
you are threading the machine incorrectly.
