How to remove the rotating arm on a Kitchenaid Dishwasher that smells?

I have cleaned under the door where mold sometimes forms, but cant get the thumb screw to turn so that I can clean under the bottom of the area below the dishes. I have limited mobility, so if someone could tell me, to the right or left, I will be more forceful, knowing that I am going in the correct direction. I'm sure something is clogging up the works down there. Thanks!

SOURCE: Kitchenaid dishwaser poor cleaning KUDS24SE

There are 2 likely candidates. The first is the chopper - the device that grinds up the food. The second is the check valve - a rubber flapper that sets to the right of the chopper. Over time it becomes stuck open which reduces pressure at the spray arms.

Good luck - I had the same issue on my KUDR01J.

SOURCE: Kitchenaid, new dishwasher, stopped cleaning top rack dishes

The problem most people encounter with dishwashers is a simple inability to get the dishes clean. There might be stuck-on food or residue from the detergent. A water pressure problem may be the culprit. You may need to replace the water intake valve. Another common problem is mineral build-up. If your house has hard water, the mineral build-up can clog the water jets. Clear each jet with a wire or pin, and run an empty load with some vinegar in the detergent dispenser about once a month.

Sometimes, the dishwasher has problems draining properly. There could be a clog in the drain hose, or a problem with the pump. It's also possible that the dishwater is getting too sudsy, and sensors in the washer aren't detecting the soap foam as water. This causes it to shut down the drain cycle too early. Just use less detergent.

SOURCE: Kitchenaid Superba Dishwasher clogged or jammed with broken glass

You will probably have to get at it from the bottom, possibly the back of the washer. Here is a link to your repair manual.

SOURCE: Upper spray arm is not turning

Hi Chris,

It sounds to me like a restriction in the pump. I put together some information here on cleaning it out. If you try these please give me some feedback as to if they help or not.

Thanks!

Almost everytime when i run the dishwasher, I open the door and it smells like rotten eggs. What could the problem be?

A lot of times there is dirt/food junk stuck in the rubber seal along the door. Try washing that off with a qtip or something. Also check your filter on the machine it is usually under the impellar arms and may require you to take off a few screws to get to it. if you aren't up to that try running a load with a 1/2 cup of vinegar and see if that will clean it

Our newer dishwasher does not clean the dishes presently. The water heats up, and drains properly, but I noticed the sprayer nozzles are not spinning when I open the dishwasher.

Try manually rotating the spray arm. Check the orifices & clean if clogged.

After loading the dishes check every time before closing the door for free rotation of the spray arm.

KitchenAid KUDM25SH sprays water from under door at start up

Make sure the area where the door and bottom of the dishwasher meet there is not a buildup of debris. Inspect the dishwasher's gasket and make sure it's intact. It is pretty common to need to replace these. Finally, unscrew the little service door on the bottom of the machine and stand back and watch it for an entire first cycle. It might be squirting out of a slightly cracked pump housing that only leaks when subjected to the stress of startup, the water valve could be leaking when it opens to fill machine, or something else could be leaking. Make sure the wash arms are not damaged, are rotating freely, and don't have anything stuck in the jet holes.

Will not clean dishes on the upper rack

Make sure you get water to the dishwasher. Check to see if the water shut-off valve (located under the sink) is open. If you get water to the dishwasher, but there is still no water inside during the fill cycle, the problem might be with a faulty water valve (located at the bottom of the dishwasher, behind the kick panel, on either side), in which case replace the water valve.

If there is not enough water, the dishes would not get cleaned. This could be caused by a partially closed water shut-off valve (located under the sink), or a faulty dishwasher water valve (located at the bottom of the dishwasher, behind the kick panel, on either side).

There is usually two, sometimes three spray arms in a dishwasher. Make sure there is no debris blocking the holes inside each spray arm.

Wash Arms not spinning --Dishes not clean

Without the model number of your Maytag number, I can not determine if when you order a wash pump motor you also get the impeller.
Sounds like you are on the right path to getting your dishwasher to wash dishes again.
Oh, while you have the dishwasher open, check that the heating element has not failed using a Multimeter.

Good Luck!

Black film on turn dials and inside door and bottom of bin

I have a similar KitchenAid model and we always ran it in energy saver mode. Over time, there was a significant buildup of mold/mildew in the unit that was not easily noticed.
Since that time, I took apart the inside of the unit and thoroughly cleaned it with bleach.
Now, we never use the energy saver mode and we use the sanitizer to make sure it gets hot enough so that it kills the mold/mildew on every cycle. The mold has not come back in over a year.

Kitchenaid Superba Dishwasher

gagaweaver, couple of things you want to check here. Check the upper spray arm for any clogged holes or cracks along the edges. Position it in the 12:00 position and run the dishwasher for a little, open the door and verify that it has rotated. Make sure the water entering the dishwasher is min. 120 degrees, use a thermometer. Makes sure that there is no large pans or dishes blocking the upper spray arm from spraying onto the inner door. If all that checks out. You will have to remove the lower spray arm, filter cover and chopper cover to make sure the chopper screen is not coated or plugged up. If it is, it will prevent a good flow of water to the upper spray arm. Catriver..post back.
