Any hardware store will have a metal screw and nuts that will be the correct diameter to fit into the open hole, and the nuts that can be tightened to hold the screw in the proper position.

Hi There Alec from VacuumSpot here. Most of these machines don't actually change the height until the handle is lowered so even though you change the dial when it is an upright position it is not until you lower the handle that the height is actually selected. Assuming that you are aware of this and it is still not adjusting I would suspect you have a small arm or lever broken. It is very rare for a height selector to simply fall out of place.The job would take 5 minutes in my opinion so it is simple but a bit fiddly.
Make sure you're not trying to adjust w/ handle in upright locked position because thewre is a cam which raises the vacuum head a little bit when handle is locked in upright position. If this is not the problem, turn vacuum upside down with handle in unlocked position and power cord not plugged in(for safety reasons obviously), unscrew and remove 3 screws that hold belt/beater brush assembly cover in place(2 are in corner near ends of beater brush and 1 is towards motor housing) tilt end of cover with 1 screw up and remove cover(there are 2 tabs at beater brush end of cover). Right above this is the height adjustment assembly with 2 rollers, raise up the assembly gently and using your finger or a bristle bottle brush,etc. make sure there is no debris caught between the height assembly and the hose(you will understand when you see it), if there is no debris you can now see the pattern on the bottom of the height adjustment knob and the lobe that rides on it, just check to make sure nothing is broken and/or missing, hope this helps!!
Most bikes use an allen key to adjust the height of the handle bars. Typically 6mm. But be careful most bikes do not have much adjustment that can be done to the height of the handle bars. The handle bar stem will have a line on it of the "minimum insertion". That line must be below the top of the head set nut for safety reasons. Look for the line as you adjust the height.
I'm growing tired of telling everyone what a piece of **** this vacuum is, I think you'll be the last! There is a design flaw that forces the wheels down according to how low you are holding the handle. Even when holding it at a normal operating height it is too low by design, causing difficult operation and finally multiple belt breaks! see my other posts about how to fix this, although it may not be worth your time!
If the belt is over a year old, it should be replaced. This is normal maintenance and is often overlooked. When the handle is in the upright position, it will appear the the height adjustment is not working. What's actually happening is that the height adjust is easily moved so you can make any adjustment you want. When the handle is pulled back, the front of the machine will lower to that setting and lock, so it will not adjust itself while you are vacuuming. If you wish to change the setting, you have to return the handle to the upright position, or you can lift the front of the machine with your hand, taking the weight of the machine off the wheels and this will allow you to slide the adjustment to another position. It is possible that the adjustment mechanism has come apart. It is comprised of three separate components. It would be very difficult to explain it here and should be addressed by someone familiar with this model.
In addition to the tab that contacts the bottom of the slider, there are 2 protusions on the adjustable wheel plate that move through holes in the housing, but only when the handle is tilted to begin vacuuming. The wheel plate has a spring that forces the tab against the slider. As the handle is moved to the upright position, the protusions move back through the holes, taking the tab away from the slider and the wheel plate locks in its highest position. Therefore, the position of the slider has no effect while the handle is upright and locked. Hope this helps.
