Pc freezes plugging in usb devices - ipod & memory stick

Step 1:
For a standard trackball mouse, unplug the mouse, turn it over and then twist the retaining ring counter-clockwise to remove it. Remove the trackball inside the mouse. Clean the trackball with warm water and dry carefully. Clean the rollers inside the mouse with a cotton swab dipped in rubbing alcohol. Replace the trackball, then secure it with the retaining ring. I would suggest that you do a full scan for viruses and malware. Malware Bytes is a good tool to use for that, download it here: http://www.malwarebytes.org/mbam.php. Also, do a virus check, some viruses try to stop you from plugging in external devices that may have anti virus software to combat the virus.

I would also suggest that you check you memory usage to make sure the your not running out of memory when trying to use these devices.

Another option is that your operating system files have been corrupted. Can you give me the model of compaq notebook that we are talking about?

Does it freeze when plugging in any USB device? Exam the USB port and plug/cable for any damage. I have seen the pins get bent and the tab cracked on a Dell USB port before.

Ther is some problem on usb port.

Unplug the offending device(s) from the computer and start it normally. Log on as an administrative user. Open Device Manager. In the View menu, make sure that Show hidden devices is checked. Go through the list of devices and find the problem children. Right-click and select Uninstall for each of them. Reboot the computer. Plug in the devices one at a time and let XP reinstall the proper drivers.

- Under device manager delete all usb controller.
- Reboot system, check if the usb controller will auto install, then try to check if this resolved your issue if not.
- Last option -Back-up data - Reinstall windows.

Normal 0 How much memory do you have installed in your computer? It may need to be, increased, as this is likely to be the cause of your computer freezing, rebooting, or shutting down.

Do you have another USB device which you can use to check if it will come up with the same problem? There are 3 things which could cause it to freeze and restart. It could be a problem with the software device driver needed to detect the USB micro cruzer, the USB port itself or it's the USB micro cruzer. One good thing worth to try is plugging your USB micro cruzer on another computer to check if the problem will also occur there. If it does, then it's isolated to the USB device. If there's no other computer available, 1) Try to run an anti-virus and anti-spyware scan on your computer, 2) start up your computer on safe mode and try to check if it'll occur there as well. 3) If it doesn't occur under safe mode and your able to access your USB device, try to run an anti-virus and anti-spyware scan on your USB device to check for problems there. 4) If all else fails, then it could be a problem with the USB device. hope this helps.
