John Deere Starter Solenoid Kit AM138497

First make sure the negative battery cable is making good contact on the frame or what ever part of the mower it is connected to. Make sure both battery cables are clean and not corroded and are tight. Then try to start the mower. If it works, fine. If not then you will bypass the solenoid and see if the starter turns the engine. To bypass the solenoid take a car jumper cable and connect one clamp to the terminal on the solenoid that goes to the battery ( see the diagrams in the links above) Turn the ignition switch to the on position. Take the other end of the same color of the jumper cable (say you'll use the red clamps) and touch the clamp to the other large terminal on the solenoid, which goes to the starter. If the starter turns the engine, then you know the starter is good and that the solenoid is bad. If the starter does not turn the engine then the starter is bad. make sure you DO NOT touch the jumper cable to the starter case or any other ground.

Too complicated. Take both leads off of the solenoid an touch them. That will run power straight from the battery to the starter so if that works, hey, you need a new solenoid! No car jumper cables necessary. You can even put a screw driver across the terminals and see if that works. You won't get electrocuted, but if you grab the shaft and not the insulated handle, you may get a nice, quick little shock.

Sounds like a dead battery. Just enough juice to try and spin the starter, but once it's actually asked to start turning, it just clicks as that's as far as it can go. Check the charge on the battery, they usually don't last long if not maintained.

Make sure all electrical connections are clean and tight especially at the battery.

SOURCE: gas tamk removal john deere 115

I had the same thing happen. I got the tank out, but it wasn't easy. Take out the bolts out that hold the rear end on. Take off the two springs that support the seat. Take out the battery and the battery tray. Take out the 6 bolts that hold the black cowling and the front of the green platform to the frame. This will allow you to lift the seat platform far enough off the rear end to allow the tank to be pulled out through the side. You also have to remove the metal bracket which holds the front of the tank and has caused the tank to leak in the first place. New tank is $56.00 not installed. I used a soldering gun and melted the plastic back together. I think it will hold quit a while. I know this is a little sketchy, but It worked for me.

If it has a clutch, that would be the problem. An electric clutch will kick on and off when it is hot if it is bad.

SOURCE: have a john deere lawn tractor. Blade will not

Check both belts on deck. Check if the clutch is clicking in. If not it will most likely need a new pto switch.
