What does this mean Hayward pool heater h150FDN gives us an hs or h5 error?

Yes thank you very much TOM W. That was the problem. The bypass valve was open on mine and gave me the HS error. Turned the bypass valve off and worked beautifully.
    Thanks again.

HS = High Limit Sensor
Heaters Maximum Water Temperature has been Exceeded.
A few reasons this occurs...

  • Low water flow thru heater, check :
    • Dirty Filter
    • Opened By Pass Valves
    • Plugged pump impeller
    • Dirty/Full baskets at skimmer or pump
    • Anything that may reduce water flow
  • Sensor could actually be doing its job, in a different aspect, Thermostat failure, and water is overheating in spa or pool?
But anyway, your heaters fault code you asked about is: hs, not h5

SOURCE: Our Hayward gas heater keeps giving us a H5 error

Could the Error code be HS? That is high temperature limit. Perhaps you' don't have enough flow, allowing the heater to heat the water to a temperature higher, than the thermostat setting. Make sure your bypass valve is closed, allowing full flow through the heater. Check your filter pressure differential , and skimmer baskets.
You didn't give your model number, and there are many models. You can go the Hayward website below and select your exact model number and download the manual. The manual will explain each error code.

We a "service" message on our Hayward gas heater h250fnd also error message HS or H5

the code is HS. it means that the maximum allowed temperature has been reached too fast. there are a few situations that may cause this. restricted flow is the most common

My Hayward H400FD is showing a H5 or HS error code, what does this mean, and what do i need to replace?

HS represents a problem with the temperature being too high. (maximum return water temp exceeded). this can be caused by a restriction in the plumbing system. i have that problem when i start my pool after a cold night. the water temperature rises too fast and the heater protects itself by flashing that code and turning off. reset the power to unit and it should work ok. if not, you may have to dig deeper as to why this code is being generated

Pool heater throws code h5? smoked

HS
Water Temperature Sensing Error

A) Inlet water temperature sensor is reporting a temperature in excess of 104 degrees.
Normal operation resumes 2 minutes after inlet water temperature sensor reports temperatures of 104 degrees or less. This error functions in both normal and remote thermostat modes.
or
B) Inlet water temperature sensor is reporting a temperature change at a rate faster than 6 degrees in 60 seconds, indicating a potentially damaging low water flow conditon. Normal operation resumes when temperatures stabilize. If this condition is detected 3 times, the heater will lock-out until the electrical power is cycled off and back on.

What if code sf and h5 comes up

The two may be related? If the right problems are present...
HS = High Limit Sensor
SF = Temperature Sensor or Thermistor
Heaters Maximum Water Temperature has been Exceeded.
Heaters Set temperature not in line with actual water temperature.

A few reasons this occurs...
  • Low water flow thru heater, check :
    • Dirty Filter
    • Opened By Pass Valves
    • Plugged pump impeller
    • Dirty/Full baskets at skimmer or pump
    • Anything that may reduce water flow
  • Sensor could actually be doing its job, in a different aspect, Thermostat failure, and water is overheating in spa or pool?
But anyway, your heaters fault code you asked about is does not necessarily mean they failed. They are informing of a problem.
