This kind of problem occurs due to failure of convergence output ICs in Sony KP-51HW40 tv. Replace convergence output ICs to solve tv problem.This set uses two of the STK-392-570 IC chips for this (convergence problem) Local tv repairman will do this job if you have no experience of electronics stuff repair.
It sounds like bad solder connections in the convergence section but that depends on what you mean by "distorted" - do the colors become misaligned (especially visable with on screen print)?
if so see below info: convergence output IC problem. convergence board would have to be removed - remove and replace 2 STK IC's and check the surrounding resistors. You can try to enter the menu and go to advanced setting and adjust the convergence. Push audio to go to advanced convergence and do the multipoint convergence to re-align the colors. If this doesn't solve, you may need to do a hardware repair.. all projections of this type will need a convergence IC repair sometime during their lifetime.

no experience in soldering i would send the board into ptscorp.com and have them repair it.
