when your black cartridge goes empty , the printer automatically goes into the reserve mode where it mix up the colors in the color cartridge to produce black color
Make sure you are inserting the correct versions of cartridges for your model. Try to re-seat the cartridges by removing and re-inserting the cartridges in the carrier. The black cartridge goes in the left carrier while the color goes in the right. Also, make sure you are using genuine Lexmark cartridges.
If you're using a refilled no14 or no15 cartridge there's every chance the cartridge will have electronically failed, because they're made to do so. In the tiniest possible print on the box it does tell you that once a pre-determined amount of ink has been delivered the cartridge is no longer "supported". In other words Ker-ching goes the Lexmark till once more.

Please go to the Lexmark site www.lexmark.com. Select Technical support, then search using the Z816 model printer. A new search bar will appear. Place the following number ENUS32244 into the box and hit <Enter>.

First, Lexmark does not now or ever support the use of a third party cartridge or a refilled cartridge ink cartridge even if it is a Lexmark cartridge. Lexmark considers this to product tampering.
That said, please get a new Lexmark cartridge that is designed for your model of printer and see if it works. If you still get the failure, use a lint free slightly dampend cloth to wipe the contacts where the new cartridge goes. If that does not work, call Lexmark Technical support and see if there is still any warranty left on the printer.
Worst comes to worst, you can just replace the printer given the cost of ink jet printers nowadays.
