Same problem here. I bought mine "As Is" from ebay, cracked it open and discovered that it is in fact the power supply that is the problem, not sure which part though. There's a Fuse that I found to be blown, replaced it, powered it back up, and it blew again. Input seems fine up to and beyond bridge rectifier, but after that, it's a bit too complicated for me to troubleshoot. Anyone have any idea which part it is? I suspect one of the many larger transistors, but I haven't got it narrowed down yet.

Has anyone actually fixed one of these power supplies before? Or is everyone just buying new PS3's instead? Any insight would be most appreciated.
    Thanks,
    -Chris

Yeah i have the same problem but no blown fuses. I checked the bridge rectifier as well as the thermal resistor but beyond that I have no clue.

i'm having overheating issues with my ps3 (no warranty). even if i rig the fan to go at 100% speed it shuts down and beeps. where can i find the "THERMAL RESISTOR"??, i think it might give the wrong temp value.

  • genix13 Mar 01, 2008

I had the same problem, I was playing COD4 one day, when suddenly the console shut down, thinking it might've just been the power at home I tried turning it back on but it wouldn't turn on again, no lights, no sounds nothing. I haven't taken a look at the psu yet in detail but I think it most likely is the same issue

My PS3 had no power (no red light). I deceided to buy a power supply on Ebay (cost me 40$ CAD with shipping) and change the part myself using a guide on how to dissassemble the PS3. I took my time and everything went fine. My PS3 now work like before and it took me 1 hour to do.

In the above link, you can order the correct Power Supply for your PS3 model. It also lists all the different power supply model numbers available. You can now replace your power supply to get a quiet PS3! Less wattage means less heat from the Cell and RSX. Which means the fan is not always at highest level!

Check the PWM circuit in the unit those along with drive transistors often fail in these supplies due to its compact size (they often cheap out with parts) also check duty cycle when it works.

It seems that the first gen of power supplies are burning out. I have seen over 150 units with that problem. Unfortunatly it is very hard to get a new PS for the PS3. You have a few options, call Sony and ask how much it would be to fix it, sell it as-is on eBay (could get you about $150-230), or pray it's still under warranty. Good luck.

A ton of the earlier PS3 power supplies are burning out, don't even bother fiddling with it because it may just wind up damaging something else. You can just replace it and get the PS3 power supply here with a warranty here PS3 Power Supply

Yes, the PS3 power supply and PS3 lasers seem very unreliable. Sony charges over $150 to fix. There are many tutorials to do it yourself, or you could even send it to us for repair. We retail both parts online.

Checkout our site OverstockDistributing.com for a good deal.

Hello my sons ps3 has stopped loading games,

I have seen lasers burn out shortly after 1 year. They are available online for purchase. It would be the laser for sure if the system starts up fine, disks go into and out of the console and if there is an icon in top right of screen like it is trying to read. I have fixed a few but laser replacement usually cost $150. Good Luck

Can't pair it with controller. I bought a white ps3 controller from hong kong. it will turn the system on but thats it, no buttons work. At first I thought it was because the controller was from overseas,...

if the ps3 reads ps2 games then it's a 60 gig,and has 4 usb ports rather than 2...if the controller works on a buddies machine and the machine freezes,it probly needs a service.

PS3 Console Power

if you get no light at all anymore you may need a replacement power supply. Ebay offers a few, I have a working one for sale right now. it is fairly easy to replace but you need to open the console.
If the warranty is expired it won't make a difference.
If you still have warrantu send it in for a replacement.
