If it has sat for a while, empty the carb. float chamber, flush out with clean fresh petrol. Make sure fresh petrol is in the tank and try again.

SOURCE: troy bilt 5550 generator no start please help

fuel, fire, mechanical. Miss one and she won;t run. Are you sure the gas was good? Not some old can laying around that may have turned or become water contaminated? If it was fresh gas, then take off the air cleaner and spray a little wd-40, or ether, or brake cleaner whatever is flammable into the carb throat. Just a 1 second shot is all it should need. Try and start with that. If it starts and then dies quickly, still a fuel problem. maybe a gasket is damaged, or the jet is clogged. When you said you checked for fire, you acutally took the plug out and had it grounded while spinning the motor and saw spark? If you saw a hot spark then you have eliminated fire. Mechanical not likely if it was running well a short time before. If a valve was damaged, it would still run but not too well. My gut feeling is it is related to fuel.

Testimonial: "thanks for the great help i did try fresh fuel and drained the carb bowl but still same prob its a head scratcher i really thank you for your input."

SOURCE: generator got wet when cover blew off. Started

First of all check if you are getting current to the plug to induce the spark, by trying the following

  1. Connect the spark plug lead to the long terminal of your tester and ground the tester to the engine with the tester's alligator clip

  2. Use the rewind or electric starter to crank the engine, and look for a spark in the tester's window.

  3. If you see a spark jump the gap in the tester, the ignition is functioning. The absence of a visible spark indicates a problem in the ignition system.

  4. your Magnetron Ignition Armature needs to be replaced

SOURCE: 5500 watt generator won't start.

With starting fluid, it runs, so this means spark and compression and valves closing properly. You mention gas flow, so gasolene is getting to the carb. This would then leave the problem being in the carb if indeed fuel is present at the carb. If you take apart the carb right now, is there fuel in the bowel? Or, remove the bottom screw on the carb, does gas flow out? Does it flow continuously or does it quit? This will indicate if the float valve is indeed opening. The only thing if you have fuel in the bowel and no start, even with the choke closed, is that the main jet must be plugged. Had the unit been sitting for quite a while with gasolene in it? Gas can "varnish" after a few months and this can cause plugging of the jets and other passages. How old is the gas in the unit? Old gas won't burn in the engine and this can also be a problem. Drain the tank, and carb, put some new gas in the unit and try it. You might have to take the carb apart again and use some carb cleaner to blow the **** out of all the carb passages. This should get it going again. Now, most important, when you get it running again, you need to adjust the engine speed so that you do not burn out any electrical equipment. If you have access to a frequency meter, plug it into the 120 volt outlet on the generator and adjust the speed so that the frequency with no load is 62 - 63 hz. This will allow the generator to drop to 60 hz under load. The adjustment is a 5/16 nut, right side of the upper engine, facing you.

Ensure choke is turned on while starting.
Ensure spark lead is fully pushed onto plug.
Remove spark plug and check there is a spark by keeping spark plug against body of engine and cranking engine, if no spark check there are no broken wires in ignition circuit.
Turn off gas tap if present. Remove the float bowl while holding a container under it to collect any gas. Turn on tap and check the fuel flows freely.
Check the air filter is clean. If it has foam elements these can be washed with warm water and detergent, rinsed and then oiled with a teaspoon of oil evenly distributed through the foam.

I have a Briggs & Stratton model 19E412 type 1131-E1 that will not start with starting fluid. It's getting spark to the plug, changed fuel filter and lines but will not start?

Question edited for clarity.
Question moved to a Briggs Generator category.

Engines only need 3 things to run.

Compression
A spark and the right time
Fuel

When you try and start, remove the plug and see if it is wet with gas? You may have a blocked carb jet.

Check compression.

My 5700 watt 11 HP McCullough generator wont start. I'm getting good gas to the plug but no spark.

The spark coil is bad if you have no spark

Small engine repair. Part is expensive.

Have you checked spark for sure?
1) Spray WD-40 directly into carburetor
If machine has spark, it will fire
2) Is exhaust port clogged with carbon and dirt?
3) Get new spark plug
Pull out old spark plug
Put spark wire on plug
Hold spark plug wire with fingers
Put spark plug threads against metal opening where spark plug came out.
Metal to metal
Pull cord or push starter
Look for spark between metal

No spark, then spark coil is bad.

There is a problem with fuel flow or carbueration. I would look for plugged fuel filter (sometimes within the gas tank, or a stuck float level, or possibly even plugged jets..

Homelite won't start

You may consider installing a new spark plug. 2-cycle engines foul plugs pretty regular. I'm guessing you are using old gasoline??
