The timing is fixed, if you suspect the timing is off the only adjustments available are the .030 clearance from pickup to flywheel and the shear Key that positions the flywheel on the crankshaft. You would also want to make sure your valve clearance is .030 as well, the issue sounds like a valve leaking, a dead cylinder or mal adjusted valve clearance causing the exhaust valve to hang open just a bit.

timing issue. Remove the flywheel to see if it has "spun" from the keyway. If the motor doesnt run at all but just backfires thru the carb, it could also mean really bad intake valves, but I would definitely check the timing first

My briggs and stratton 18 hp vanguard model 356447 will not start just back fires through the carb. I have good comprssion and spark at both plugs. I replaced the flywheel key as thought the backfireing...

check intake valves for proper seating. If the valves do not close completely it will allow the engine to backfire thru the carb. Another possibility is internal timing caused by the misalignment of the timing gears between the crankshaft and cam gears.

Briggs & stratton mod. 406777-0115-E1 engine backfires thru exhaust

This is a true tale sign of a valve being out of adjustment or possible burnt or sticking. Most likely its just out of adjustment. Setting them to Book Specifications of: Valve Clearance (cold) IN and EX .005" (0.13 mm) should take care of the problem. Since you said that it runs fine rules out the possibility of a sheared flywheel key, though I have seen one run with it slightly sheared. Thanks; George

Backfiring

Backfiring is either burned valves or often due to timing slipped because of broken flywheel key/keyway.

18hp twin cylinder Briggs & Stratton backfire

Check to see if the carb is clean, if so the anti diesel value could not be working. Apply 12 volts to value and see if it move's. If that works then you may what to check the fuel pump and see if it pumps. After you tried all that then you may have change the main jet size because these engines come with a small jet for the EPA.
