No all cds/dvd work in all cd/dvd drives. I suspect your drive cannot read that make of cd although anothers cd rom can. Try making a copy of the disk on someone elses pc and try that in yours and you will probably find it works. You could always copy the cd to a pen drive and install it on yours from that.

The problem might be that the DVD-CD rom might be having a lens/laser problem, the lens might be weak and cannot read discs anymore. So it would not be functioning anymore. The solution to that is for you to get the laptop opened and remove the DVD-CD rom Then open the CD rom up and replace the lens.

Also the problem might be that the DVD-CD rom might have been disconnected from the inside, so all you have to do to solve that problem is for you to open the laptop up and try a new connector cable and secure the connection to the mother board is tight, then run the CD rom after reassembling the laptop together.

The CD rom is limited to CD's. In order to read a DVD, you will need to install a DVD rom. My suggestion is to get an external DVD Burner - i just bought a Samsung slim external DVD burner that reads / writes CD's and DVD's.
You will have no luck ever reading a dvd in a cd rom.

You can do the following steps:
1. Check the Device Manager
2. Click the DVD rom + sign
3. Right Click on the name of the DVD rom
4. Select "Properties"
5. Select the DVD Region Tab
6. Make sure the Current Region is set to your location

Hello my friend,looks like lens problem.Before replace it try to clean the lens with cloth or some alcohol and blow some air with a air compressor inside the DVD ROM.

Hello my friend, Thus you Disk Rom is a DVD? if it not DVD then it cannot read DVD but if it is DVD then try to insert other DVD or CD Disk to check if it really works. Also try to clean your ROM with a disk cleaner. Then if all of the steps are done and still the result is same problem then ship it back to the suplier or buy new ROM. Thanks

What I see from the description is that the drive is a combo drive. Combo drives are CD-RW and DVD-ROM drives means
CD-RW = Compact Disk-Read Write
DVD-ROM = Digital Versatile Disk - Read Only Memory
so these drives can read and write CDs but can only read DVDs (Cannot write or burn DVDs)
If you want to be able to burn DVDs then you need to have DVD RW drive (either DVD+RW or DVD-RW)

You said that you are able to burn DVDs on other computer so please check the label on the DVD drive.. it should be DVD-RW/DVD+RW drive

yes..it's most likely kaput. I have a tecra, and I'm on my second CD/DVD replacement. They are easy to find and replace(one screw underneath, and just slide em out)..
