I am a veteran seamstress and I may be able to help you. it sounds as though you just have the wrong needle in the machine or the needle is in backwards.. Machine needles are different lengths according to what machine it is. The needle could also be dull on the point. Try this and see if it helps. Also your local sew shop can help you no charge if you just go in and talk with them. The techs enjoy helping for the most part I have discovered.

There might be something jamming the petal open so it won't slow or stop when you put your foot on it.. I would try that, get some canned air and blow it out and see if it helps.

We had the slow issue and it was the foot pedal. But, rather than replace the pedal I disassembled it, cleaned it, then found a little adjustable pot (resistor). I used a tiny screwdriver to adjust the pot and the speed increased. I noticed that there is a slot in the bottom of the pedal housing that is for accessing the pot without disassembling the pedal. My wife sewed a dress after the repair and so far it is working as it used to.

How is your power cord? Has it been stored wound tightly? Take it in for service because it may overheat and destroy the machine. I hope that it is under warranty or that it won't cost you anything to diagnose it, but something is very wrong.

I think that you need a new motor, I saw one online for $90 and it looks like it would be easy to install yourself, mostly plug in and bolt to the machine, I saw it on www.sewingpartsonline.com but there are other sites,
