SOURCE: I just purchased a new 2GB Ram Memory from

it is better to remove both the old RAM and fix the new RAM in the upper slot.....
you can fix one of the old ram to the other empty slot, but sometime timing conflict may arise between two Ram and the system may not function properly...anyhow if both the new and old ram are of same operating frequency you can use both....

Testimonial: "I can't thank you enough, for this quick response. I did leave the old card in the lower slot and everything seems OK, but am going to remove it."

SOURCE: instal 8 gb ram toshiba e205 s1904

you need to open the memory door on the bottom of the laptop. remove the old memory by releasing the latches on each side of the memory board. the memory should tilt and then you can remove it. slide the new memory in and press down until the latches catch and the memory is secured. close it up and go into the bios and save the new memory settings. restart normally.

How do I reset the Bios Password on my Toshiba Satellite C675-S7103 laptop

Need to reboot with a password recovery program if you don't have the original password. You can usually find these on the internet and you can either download and burn your own disk or sometimes buy a disk from such sources as eBay. Just view the readme or instruction file which comes on the disk. Rich

Toshiba L40 constant disk activity

Did you check if your computer is capable of running Windows 8 comfortably? Have you followed the upgrade procedure? 2 GB memory seems rather too little. What was the original Windows version? XP, Vista, Windows 7. Was the original OS 32 bits or 64 bits?

Is there a way the memory in a toshiba satellite 1005-s157 be increased to more than 512MB?

Yes you can, at least to 1 Gb maybe possibly to 2 Gb.
There will be two memory slots in your laptop. To increase the RAM to 1 Gb install another 512 Mb RAM module in the empty 2nd memory slot. Make sure you use the same make and speed RAM as the one that is installed.
If you have two 256 Mb RAM modules installed in your laptop then you need to replace the two 256 Mb RAM modules with two 512 Mb RAM modules to get a total of 1 Gb RAM.

This is from the Toshiba website. This is the only place you need be concerned about. It says max of 2GB, so unless you swapped out your motherboard, you are stuck with 2GB.
