Without looking at it it's hard to say for certain, but most likely it's low on freon. It could also be a defrost heater not working properly.

SOURCE: Top half not freezing

If this is not a frost free unit , it probably has a freon leak. This is usually not worth fixing in a deep freeze. If it is a frost free unit the fan could be bad. This is an easy repair.

SOURCE: fridge freezer

Check to see if the evaporator fan behind the freezer wall (remove wall) is running. If it isnt the air will not flow properly in the unit. Replace the fan motor and it will fix it.

SOURCE: My freezer is freezing at the bottom but is not at

Short on refrigerant would be a good starting point, pressure temp relationship should be tested by an opperative.

SOURCE: top half does not freeze

There is a fan behind the back wall of the freezer about 1/2 way up from the bottom, you should be able to hear this running when the freezer is on. If you do not hear this then you need a new evaporator fan motor.

If you hear the fan run then you most likely have a problem with the automatic defrost cycle that would most likely be the heat element that is located just below the coils inside the freezer behind the panel.

The top half is still working but the bottom half seems to have stopped freezing -- any ideas please?

There is a fan in the freezer compartment that blows cold air into the refrigerator part. If it is not working or if the baffle that directs the air is not functioning, that could account for the less than ideal temps.

Also check the auto defrost mechanism for proper operation.

Upright freezer

If it has a fan in the freezer it need to be running to circulate the cold air.
If the coils are not icing up evenly from top to bottom you have a system low on freon.
The light frosting is normal.
A model number would really help to troubleshoot the problem.
