Not much you can do. Switching off the camera and then on, is like a cod boot from a computer.
You could try to remove the battery for a few seconds, and then reinsert it. Then you should investigate why the lens stays out. Is it because of a mechanical problem, or came some dirt between the barrel, while the camera got wet? Try to remove any obstruction. feel if the lens can move by gently moving the barrel a little. If it goes. Don't apply force, because you could damage the mechanical or electrical parts in the lens barrel.
I hope it works. Don't forget: the battery should be charged fully.

Thanks Harrie, the camera was in its case when it got wet so there is no debris around the lens. The battery is fully charged. The camera has been in rice for about 5 days. I am thinking maybe corrosion has set in already?

  • Harrie May 12, 2014

Michael, you could be right. But as long as the lens barrel is out, you could try to clean it and try to move it. If water is in the inside, even the rice won't prevent corrosion. Next time anything valuable falls in the water, put it in a bag and bring it straight to a specialised repair centre. You can't wait for hours. But again, give it a try, by turning and pressing on the lens barrel. I keep my fingers crossed.

The following blog outlines some repair options for a lens error. They won't work for all cases, but they're worth a try if the camera's no longer under warranty:

SOURCE: canon powershot a460

I have a Canon A460 that does this every now and then. Usually if I removed the batteries and put them back in, it does the trick. If that doesn't work, and the camera will stay on, try resetting it. Click Menu> Tools and then scroll all the way to the last option Reset All. Good luck!

SOURCE: Lens error, restart camera

Lens error is usually caused by mechanical faults concerning lens assembly. The lens cannot extend or retract fully, the error is detected and lens error is returned.
Sometimes this can be fixed playing with the lens during extraction or retraction to help the lens asset getting back to normal.
More often the camera lens must be disassembled and re-assembled by a technician to fix the problem.

SOURCE: Lens error: restart camera

If you get that message the lens is stuck.
You should take the camera to a repair center.
They should repair it under warranty.
I have seen this problem a few times already.

Lens errors are fairly common. Usually it's sand or grit interfering with the lens extension mechanism. Or the camera's been dropped with the lens extended. Or the camera has been powered on, but the lens had been blocked preventing its extension. Or the battery ran down with the lens extended ... Unfortunately, many cameras that fall prey to this can only be corrected by professional repair. But, here are some things that you can do that may correct it. Lense error, restart your camera

If i told you to smack it around a bit would ytou believe me?

But that is the fix Canon use to get rid of these errors 98% of the time.
Charge or change the battery, insert it tuen camer on when it goes off smack it hard into your palm a few times and turn it back on.
Just incase there is some dirt/dust stopping the lens from extending blow a can of compressed air around it and give it another few slaps . Sometimes after about 20-30 ngoes of this the camera will jump back into service Believe me it does work nearly all the time Canon charged me $90 to do this trick

Lens Error - Restart Camera : Lens remains in extended position.

I had the same problem with the same camera. Ended up twisting the lens by hand back and forth while powering the camera on and off till the lens pins finally realined and let it close properly. Took alot of patience and care but has worked since. Usual cause of this problem is powering camera while the lens is blocked from extending, ie in a case, laying on its face etc.
