Sony Trinitron 20" TV (KV-2093R) Suddenly Shut Off

Was watching TV live (not through Tivo) and suddenly the screen went black except for a horizontal green line came up on the middle of the screen for a second, then the green line shrank into a green dot and all went black.
No sound and no picture. The little red light on the front of the TV set was off, so there was no power on. Repeated tries to turn it on failed.
The picture had been excellent since the TV was new in 1986, so it's over 22 years old now. No previous trouble of any kind. Any idea what happened? Thanks!

You're correct! Wouldn't make sense to spend any money fixing a TV set that old. Now I have to get rid of this heavy thing and replace it with an LCD flat panel--one with at least a 32" screen. Thanks!

Wow, if I got 22 years out of a T.V., personally, I would probably faint. Sorry I can't help with the problem, but I think I can understand because you get so used to something working good for so long, why does it have to end.?? Good luck!

Hello

Six blinks of standby light in Sony TVs denotes the absence of horizontal oscillation.

No Horizontal (H STOP), no raster, goes to the blinking self-diagnosis function immediately. Check C515 & 516 and the jungle IC, IC206.
In most cases the Ic is foud defective. anyway check its soldering points for any loose contact, or bad solerings. Check the line drive transformer, a very little transformer soldered directly to the main printed circuit board, very close to the horizontal output transistor. Check its primary winidngs for open. If it gets open no horizontal drive signal will be present at the base of the horizontal output transitor, that also may the cause of horizontal stop.

Hello,

The 2X blink indicates that either the Horizontal output transistor is shorted, or the RGB amp is shorted (on the CV board).

The Horizontal output is probably the cause, and as a general rule, the flyback should be replaced along with the H-Out transistor. Good news is that Sony is pretty good about having parts in stock. In fact, a lot of times they will have the A board with all the parts on it for only a few bucks more than just the flyback, so you basically get a new TV (electronics-wise).

Any decent repair shop should help get the parts/do the repair for you if you don't have the electronic experience.

Hope this helps you...

Sony Trinitron 29inch Color TV

The 2 blinks are an indication of over-current. This is usually because of a shorted component. The most common is the horizontal output transistor. This will be a 3-legged part attached to a heat sink close to the flyback transformer (part with red wire coming out the top). This transistor will be marked C4856 or something similar. Update this with the exact marking and I'll provide you with the full part number and approximate cost.

Sony Trinitron KV-27FS13

Good day.

Maybe there is a problem with eigther the vertical or horizontal circuitry of your unit. blinking lights indicate a problem associated with your flyback not being able to oscillate and distribute the supply for the tuner, audio, vertical...etc..
That is an internal problem pls refer to a qualified technician.

No picture and no sound,

Something shorted and shut your set down. Most likely the high voltage transformer shorted which also shorted the horizontal output transistor. Stargazer

1996 Sony 32" Trinitron - Suddenly lost picture and sound

The most common problem with TV was the failure of the Horizontal Output Transistor, this will also damage 2 transistors in the power supply and a resistor in the power supply also. (From memory): Horizontal Output location # Q501, 2 power supply transistors Locations Q601, Q602, and resistor Location R607. Also solder the Horizontal drive transformer, you can find it by following the circuit board from the base of the Horizontal output. Some models used an IC instead of the 2 transistors in the powersupply, it will have six legs and check like 2 transistors. Good Luck.
